Read previewHaize Labs, an AI safety startup, is raising an early-stage round that investors are clamoring to invest in, Business Insider has learned. However, for hot startups, there can be more investor demand than a startup can accommodate, as with Haize Labs' round. One source indicated that Haize Labs received term sheets with valuations ranging from $30 million to over $100 million. Haize Labs is building automated red-teaming and stress-testing algorithms to identify risks in AI models and agents. AI safety has increasingly become a concern, especially as AI usage increases among both consumers and enterprises.

Glaeze began documenting her 3D printed home on TikTok shortly after moving into it in April. Glaeze also shows viewers a tour of a model 3D printed home by Icon. 3D printing construction startup Icon teamed up with home construction giant Lennar to build a community of 100 3D printed houses, called the Wolf Ranch, just north of Austin. "My favorite thing about living in a 3D printed house is really the aesthetic," Glaeze said. An aerial view of the 3D printed homes.

While it might look like the stuff of nightmares, this tiny robot covered in living skin could mark a step forward in the quest to make robots more human-like. It’s the work of researchers in Japan, who say they have discovered a new way to bind living skin tissue to a mechanical robotic surface. Previously, he developed a “living” robot skin — using collagen, a fibrous protein in human skin, and human dermal fibroblasts, the main cell type in connective tissue — that could be applied to a robotic finger and bend without breaking. The new method uses V-shaped holes on the robot's surface to attach the living skin securely. However, ensuring the consistency and quality of the living skin might not be so easy, says Takeuchi.

CNN —The Supreme Court ruled Friday in favor of an Oregon city that ticketed homeless people for sleeping outside, rejecting arguments that such “anti-camping” ordinances violate the Constitution’s ban on “cruel and unusual” punishment. The case centered on “anti-camping” ordinances in Grants Pass, Oregon, that were challenged by several residents experiencing homelessness. “For some people, sleeping outside is their only option.” The city, she said, “punishes them for being homeless. The ordinances barred people from sleeping in public with “bedding,” which can include sleeping bags or bundled-up clothing. In reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling, housing rights groups came out in full force to condemn the decision.

The first presidential debate came and went, and voters gained little additional insight into each candidate's economic visions. The latest Social Security and Medicare Board of Trustees report found that the program will only be able to pay out full benefits for the next 11 years. Trump, on the other hand, said Biden is going to "destroy Social Security" and did not offer any insight into how he might address the program. Save Social Security, don't destroy it." Members of the media work during the first presidential debate with US President Joe Biden and former US President Donald Trump in Atlanta, Georgia, US, on Thursday, June 27, 2024. U.K.: 'Biden struggles ... Trump lies'In the U.K., the Guardian pointed to issues with both Biden and Trump at the debate, headlining its story: "Biden struggles to land lines as Trump lies in first presidential debate." Meanwhile, the BBC suggested Biden struggled with Trump's attacks, titling its live blog of the debate: "Biden stumbles in first presidential debate as Trump avoids key questions." Biden struggled repeatedly and Trump repeated falsehoods, it said, adding that the debate was "marked by personal attacks." In another story, the newspaper summarized the debate: "Biden disgraces himself, Trump wastes his chance, but the true losers of the first TV debate in the U.S. election campaigns are the Americans."

The case — City of Grants Pass v. Johnson — is the most consequential the court has decided dealing with homelessness in decades. And they were everywhere, although, naturally, New York City was a magnet, as it has always been for L.G.B.T.Q.+ people looking for a place in which they can be themselves. New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth. I wore an eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Statue of Liberty costume to the Easter Parade in New York City, and Kirsten came along with me. By the time I turned 30, I’d been telling people I was older for years, because I’m not the type to bemoan the loss of my youth. Going to New York felt like this moment of emerging to a wider audience, and then I started to travel a lot.

CNN —The confrontation in Atlanta between Joe Biden and Donald Trump Thursday night has a good chance of becoming the most fateful presidential debate in US history. The momentous nature of this debate can only be fully understood against the backdrop of the unprecedented politics of the times. But the tension surrounding this year’s first debate in June, rather than in September or October as usual, is palpable. “The closer the election, the greater the chance that a debate could influence it,” said Aaron Kall, director of debate at the University of Michigan, who has conducted an in-depth study of every presidential debate. Biden has raised the stakes for himself heading into the debate higher than those any modern president faced.

President Biden and former President Donald Trump have starkly different visions for the presidency and the future of the country. I don’t know if we’ll get the debate we want, or just the debate we deserve, but I do know that the questions Tapper and Bash choose to ask really matter. Last week, I asked readers to tell me the questions you hope to hear at the debate, and I received hundreds of insightful and occasionally trollish responses. It’s clear you are hungry for a debate about issues that aren’t getting a lot of attention on the campaign trail. You’re also looking for Biden and Trump to convince you why, in their second go-round, you should get excited about them.

President Biden is a good man who capped a long career in public service with a successful presidential term. One of the perils facing this country, I believe and Biden believes, is the risk of a victory by Donald Trump. Biden has never been a great debater, but his voice and manner didn’t put to rest the doubts about his age and effectiveness. A candidate’s physical frailty, hoarse voice and rambling responses may not be good predictors of how that person will govern. But in this election, they probably are good predictors that the candidate will lose in November and not have a chance to govern again.

AI chatbots lack humor, producing bland and overly politically correct jokes. A study by Google's DeepMind had 20 comedians test OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Big Tech companies like Google and Amazon emphasize humor to make AI more engaging. In a study published earlier this month, Google DeepMind researchers concluded that artificial intelligence chatbots are simply not funny.

In the 1960s, there were six people of working age for every retired person, according to the World Economic Forum. “What you’re seeing is increased spending on programs like Medicare and Social Security as the baby boomers are aging into those programs. And then of course, fewer workers relative to the number of people who are receiving Social Security and Medicare benefits,” said Dahl. Social Security payments still provide about 90% of income for more than a quarter of older adults in the United States, according to Social Security Agency surveys. But without intervention, the Social Security trust fund will be depleted by the mid-2030s, meaning that only a portion of retirees’ expected benefits will be paid out.

I’ve learned this from studying American reactions to almost every general election presidential debate since 1992. Yet those things often have little to no discernible impact on the opinions of many people watching at home. To be fair, some of the debates I watched with voters, like Bill Clinton and Bob Dole’s in 1996, had no major impact on the electorate’s mood. Others — like the three-way town hall debate with Mr. Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot in 1992 and the first George W. Bush-Al Gore debate in 2000 and the three Donald Trump-Hillary Clinton collisions — arguably changed history.
