☆ Robert Brustein, Passionate Force in Nonprofit Theater, Dies at 96

Robert Brustein, an erudite and contentious advocate for profit-indifferent theater, in the service of which he wore many hats — critic, teacher, producer, director, playwright and even actor — died on Sunday at his home in Cambridge, Mass. His death was confirmed by his wife, Doreen Beinart. Mr. Brustein was dean of the drama school at Yale and founded and ran the Yale Repertory Theater and the American Repertory Theater at Harvard, producing well over 100 plays and securing them in the regional theater firmament. A prolific writer with the zeal of an environmentalist and the moral certainty of a martyr, he reviewed stage productions for The New Republic for more than 50 years. In many books and in countless newspaper and magazine articles, he argued for brave theater, intellectual theater, nonpandering theater, and worried that the art form was being attenuated by the profit motive.

Here is a chance to see it live, in a McCarter Theater Center-Berkeley Repertory Theater co-production. The play was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2007, when Vogel was on the jury. James Warwick directs the world-premiere production. Directed by John Collins, the company’s artistic director, this world-premiere production instead samples chunks from each of the novel’s 18 episodes, letting them erupt in all their verbosity, vulgarity, vivacity and — it is Joyce, after all — opacity. Cross that with the trans-Atlantic success of “Six,” and you arrive at this production: a Lizzie Borden rock musical with an all-female cast.

We need to pay more attention to nonprofit theaters and theaters outside New York — because there are real challenges in those places we need to be telling our readers about. Theaters that once saw themselves either as competitors or just strangers are much more interested in finding ways to help one another. There’s a coalition forming of theaters in Connecticut that is talking about whether the theaters might be able to share set-building functions. A lot of theaters are talking about the possibility of either more government assistance or for more foundations to take seriously the challenges facing this field. How will we see an effect on Broadway, which depends on nonprofit theaters to develop material and support artists?

On a barge in Red Hook, Brooklyn, dockworkers chant against their corrupt union boss. “We’re striking this ship!” yells the group’s leader. This is a scene from Brave New World Repertory Theater’s production of “The Hook,” the first American staging of an adapted Arthur Miller screenplay. The show, which opens at the Waterfront Museum on Friday, follows Marty, a longshoreman in 1950 who fights against the union corruption that controlled Red Hook’s waterfront. Now the show returns to the neighborhood in which it is set, staged aboard a docked ship straight from Panto’s time.

Brent won, and Ms. Smith had to write something for the celebration. “I feel guilty that all of this is my fault,” Ms. Smith says over the phone from her hotel in Boston, just before her play’s recent run at Harvard’s American Repertory Theater. She explains that it has been both “extraordinary” and discomfiting to watch her words performed to packed houses. “I’m in awe of people who work in this form because real-time rejection is not something I’m used to.”
