Surrealism’s origins are in the collective trauma of World War I and the global flu epidemic of 1918. Marcel Mariën was a pivotal figure in the Belgian surrealism movement. However, the absence of a defined aesthetic gave surrealist artists a unique freedom to express themselves in whatever way they chose. Different artists from different backgrounds can use Surrealism to explore their individual concerns,” said Francisa Vandepitte, curator of “Imagine!

Hotels, barbershops, nightclubs and bike repair stores carry references to his work. In the sweltering Colombian mountain town of Aracataca, it is impossible to walk down a single street without seeing allusions to its most renowned former resident: the winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature, Gabriel García Márquez. Yellow butterflies are seen all over town, a nod to one of his famous literary images. The house where he lived as a child has been turned into a museum filled with its original furniture, including the crib where he slept. The library, named Biblioteca Pública Municipal Remedios La Bella, after the character Remedios the Beauty from his novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” features a glass case of his books translated into various languages.

John Zorn may have turned 70 this month, but he looks younger. Zorn has been taking his stylistically varied live performances on the road to celebrate this birthday. On Thursday, the Miller Theater at Columbia University took its turn, with the first in a series of “composer portrait” concerts that continue into November. Throughout the evening, this most hyperactive of American composers could be seen bounding with ease between the stage and his seat in the audience. With a ringleader’s zeal, Zorn introduced different groupings of musicians.

Typically, it’s the faithful who carry the various likenesses of Mary in similar festivals across the world. A century ago, the Vatican formally granted special permission for animals to pull the floats with life-sized statues of the Virgin Mary, said the Rev. Another uncommon aspect of the procession is the iconic century-old sacred image standing on the bow of a boat-shaped float – the Virgin Mary breastfeeding infant Jesus. At least 50 were women dressed in pink and blue like the Virgin statue, carrying Jesus dolls or real babies. One of this year’s floats represented Our Lady of Peace, her statue framed by flags of conflict-ridden countries like Ukraine and Libya.

Like many of her contemporaries, Varo fled Europe as war bore down on the continent, arriving in Mexico in 1941. It took more than a decade for her to exhibit her work there, but when she did, she left her mark. HONG KONG, May 29 (Reuters) - A Hong Kong Court on Monday rejected an application to terminate a landmark national security trial against media tycoon Jimmy Lai, a case that could see him spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted. Jimmy Lai, 75, is the founder of now shut pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily and one of the most prominent Hong Kong critics of China's Communist Party leadership, including President Xi Jinping. Lai and his three companies, Apple Daily Limited, Apple Daily Printing Limited, AD Internet Limited faced a total of three charges under the national security law, including collusion with foreign forces. Beijing imposed the national security law on Hong Kong in 2020 after months of anti-government protests. The security law gives the power of the Chief Executive to select a panel of judges who can hear national security cases.
