Alphabet shares surged in Friday's premarket after a blowout earnings report for the Google owner. AdvertisementAlphabet stock surged ahead of Friday's opening bell as investors cheered the Google owner's blowout first-quarter earnings. If those gains hold until the opening bell, its valuation will top $2 trillion for the first time. Meanwhile, Microsoft stock made more modest gains after it reported first-quarter earnings on Thursday afternoon. Shares were up almost in pre-market trading, putting its market capitalization on course to jump about $11 billion at the opening bell back above $3 trillion.

And that's seen by the dot plot and their own inability to predict when interest rate cuts are going to happen." Related storiesWhen the yield curve is inverted, meaning short-term rates are above longer-term ones, a barbell strategy in bonds means betting on long- and short-duration bonds. And that barbell is kind of what investing in the yield curve looks like today", Huffman said. But if interest rates fall, you will be forced to reinvest in a lower interest rate environment. Avoid the 10-year or 30-year duration bonds because they will face a negative yield curve role, which could reduce their total return potential, she added.

UBS doesn't see the Federal Reserve embarking on rate cuts until September — and that means now is the time to snap up tax-free municipal bonds. Bond yields and prices move inversely, so a decline in rates will come with price appreciation for the underlying issues. "Against that backdrop, we believe that yields on quality municipal bonds look attractive at current levels," wrote UBS Wealth Management senior municipal bond strategist Kathleen McNamara in a report last week. The kicker of tax-free income Muni bonds are generally backed by the full faith and credit of the issuer, which makes them less of a default risk compared with corporates. Large diversified municipal bond funds can be cheap, but state-focused funds tend to be a little more costly.

Today's higher rates on CDs aren't going to last , however. For investors contending with maturing CDs, that means they're running out of places to stash their idle cash and still generate an attractive yield. "The issue is reinvestment risk," said Michael Carbone, certified financial planner and financial advisor at Eppolito Financial Strategies in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. That's because once the Fed begins cutting rates, fixed income with longer-dated maturities will allow investors to lock in those higher yields. An opportunity to diversify fixed income In addition to adding exposure to longer-dated bonds, advisors have also been diversifying across different classes of fixed income.

Such a move would bode well for fixed income, including municipal bonds. Recent data from Columbia Threadneedle Investments and Bloomberg, shows that muni bonds can see a jump in cumulative tax-equivalent returns once the Fed begins cutting rates. When taking into account the tax savings, muni bond investors don't have to take that much risk to capture attractive yields. Rising flows and higher yields Investors have been pouring money into muni bond funds lately. BlackRock's iShares National Muni Bond ETF (MUB) , meanwhile, has seen an exodus of more than $1 billion in flows this year, but it experienced inflows of $150.9 million in the past week.

In a market bedazzled by flashy growth stocks, Torray Investment Partners instead runs a fund that's trying to redefine what value is. The Torray Fund , founded by the late Robert Torray in 1990, is ahead 7.4% so far this year, outpacing the 6.5% gain in the S & P 500. Apart from the Torray Fund, the firm manages four other concentrated portfolios that also hold between 20 and 30 companies. These portfolios are separately managed accounts of either concentrated large growth companies, small- and mid-capitalization growth names, large value companies and equity income. Compared to other large value funds, Torray is overweight in all three.

Capital One announced on Monday that it would acquire Discover Financial Services in an all-stock transaction valued at $35.3 billion, a deal that would merge two of the largest credit card companies in the United States. “A space that is already dominated by a relatively small number of megaplayers is about to get a little smaller,” said Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree. Capital One, with $479 billion in assets, is one of the nation’s largest banks, and it issues credit cards on networks run by Visa and Mastercard. Acquiring Discover will give it access to a credit card network of 305 million cardholders, adding to its base of more than 100 million customers. The country’s four major networks are American Express, Mastercard, Visa and Discover, which has far fewer cardholders than its competitors.

Of the banks under Wells Fargo's coverage, Discover was the first to trim its online savings account rate for this rate cycle, according to analyst Michael Kaye. It's a marked turn from when online banks jockeyed for customers' deposits as the Fed began raising rates in March 2022. Too good to last See below for a table of online banks and the APY they're offering on savings accounts. The catch with savings accounts is that banks can opt to tweak their yields at any time. Investors hoping to play a lower rate environment with exchange-traded funds may want to consider buying intermediate-term bond funds .

The savings will provide “necessary capacity for reinvestment to reinforce the resilience of our infrastructure as we absorb Credit Suisse and to drive sustainable growth by investing in talent, products and services,” it added. Already, UBS (UBS) slashed headcount in the fourth quarter by more than 3,100 to under 113,000, taking the number of layoffs announced last year above 16,000. “2023 was a defining year in UBS’s history with the acquisition of Credit Suisse,” CEO Sergio Ermotti said in a statement. UBS agreed to buy Credit Suisse last March for the bargain price of $3 billion in a rescue orchestrated by Swiss authorities to avert a banking sector meltdown. Some of the banking industry’s most powerful trade groups sued the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Monday, claiming that the regulators overstepped their authority in updating a law meant to reverse the effects of redlining. In October, the regulators imposed new frameworks for assessing whether banks are abiding by the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act, which requires banks to do business in neighborhoods made up largely of racial minorities or low-income households that they typically shunned. The lawsuit said the rule was “a complicated and burdensome regime” and might “ultimately result in reduced lending to the very populations that the C.R.A. was designed to benefit.”The suit was filed by the American Bankers Association, the Independent Community Bankers of America and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, trade groups that represent virtually all U.S. banks. Several Texas groups joined as plaintiffs, allowing the Washington-based groups to sue in federal court in that state, where they have already won favorable rulings against the regulators.

Given that most of the "Magnificent Seven" has surpassed consensus expectations, Goldman Sachs said the group of big technology companies could once again exceed the broader market's gains this year. So far, six of the Magnificent Seven — all but blockbuster chipmaker Nvidia — have reported fourth-quarter results. Each of the companies, with the exception of electric vehicle maker Tesla , exceeded consensus sales forecasts, and collectively posted 14% year-over-year quarterly sales growth, Kostin noted. Analysts also expect the Magnificent Seven to outperform in margin expansion over the next three years, compared with the rest of the market, he added. Shares of the Magnificent Seven raced ahead of the broader market last year.

As attractive as today's yields may look on certain dividend-paying stocks, they only tell part of the story when you're choosing names for income. Lower interest rates make other income-generating assets, including dividend-paying stocks, more attractive compared to the risk-free yields on Treasurys. Dividend stocks took their lumps during 2022 as the Fed embarked on its rate hikes – consider that the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIG) posted a total return of negative 9% in 2022 – and rate-sensitive income stocks in the utilities and real estate sector suffered. Check with your brokerage to make sure you have dividends reinvested as your preference for individual stocks and ETFs.
