President Donald Trump’s rabid online following will be smaller from now on, but it may be more extreme. Without a megaphone to distribute his views on social media, Trump would have a difficult time influencing other media or finding new people to build his audience. Trump supporters were increasingly fixated on outsiders, with more of their posts discussing subjects such as “socialism” and “antifa.”Other research supports the idea that deplatforming is effective. Some of Trump’s supporters have migrated to Telegram, a messaging app founded in Russia that can accommodate large groups. “Fringe groups organizing on the internet predate the big social media networks.”

Though deprived of his big online megaphones, Trump does have alternative options of much smaller reach. Twitch and Snapchat also have disabled Trump’s accounts, while Shopify took down online stores affiliated with the president and Reddit removed a Trump subgroup. Twitter also banned Trump loyalists including former national security advisor Michael Flynn in a sweeping purge of accounts promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory and the Capitol insurrection. Losing Amazon Web Services will mean Parler needs to scramble to find another web host — in addition to the re-engineering. And not just individual citizens have free speech rights.

These Tech Companies Are Paying Workers the Same Rates Across U.S.
  + stars: | 2020-12-29 | by ( Katherine Bindley | ) www.wsj.com sentiment -1.00   time to read: +1 min
Tech workers and employers alike are beginning to question location-focused pay scales. In setting pay without regard for location, tech companies including Reddit Inc. and Zillow Group Inc. are making a potentially expensive gamble to retain talent and gain a hiring edge. Payment platform Stripe Inc. offered one-time bonuses for workers who moved out of San Francisco, Seattle or New York—and agreed to a pay cut of up to 10%. But a pay cut for any reason can be bad for worker morale, said Jake Rosenfeld, a sociology professor at Washington University in St. Louis who researches pay determination. A November survey of 600 tech workers by the job-search platform Indeed found that 60% of respondents would be willing to take a pay cut to work remotely permanently while 40% said they wouldn’t.

WASHINGTON—The Federal Trade Commission on Monday ordered nine prominent social-media and internet companies to provide a litany of data about their operations as part of a wide-ranging study into their business practices. The orders demand the companies turn over detailed, private business information about how they track Americans’ online activities and how they use that data. The agency has broad legal authority to seek information from U.S. companies and is also empowered to police unfair and deceptive business practices. “Social media and video streaming companies now follow users everywhere through apps on their always-present mobile devices. But to what end?” FTC Commissioners Rohit Chopra, Rebecca Slaughter and Christine Wilson said in a joint statement.
