In 2022, exit polling found Democrats had an 11-point advantage on the issue of abortion. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points.

In today's edition, our team breaks down a key Nebraska state senator's decision to stand in the way of a Trump-backed drive to change how the state allocates its electoral votes. Trump allies have pushed for a special legislative session intended for the Republican-controlled legislature to change Nebraska to a winner-take-all system instead of awarding electoral votes by congressional district. The developments appear to cap months of deliberations over whether Nebraska lawmakers could change the way the state apportions its electoral votes in a way that would benefit Trump. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district, and the swing district around Omaha has twice gone to Democrats in recent years, giving them one electoral vote from an otherwise ruby-red state. But if lawmakers changed that to a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska’s electoral votes.

A Republican-controlled chamber could thwart Harris’ nominees to fill out her administration and the courts, along with her legislative agenda. Top Senate Republicans told NBC News she would need their sign-off to secure votes on any judicial nominees, including for the Supreme Court. The prospect of a split Congress looms over a possible Harris win even if Democrats have a strong year and sweep every swing state. And if it’s a GOP-led Senate, Republicans would control a floor vote. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, would have seniority to be the next Judiciary Committee chair and said he intends to claim the position if Republicans win control.

Graham, acting on behalf of the Trump campaign, was working to encourage Pillen to call a special legislative session at which lawmakers could consider changing the state's apportionment of electoral votes, the source said. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district. That one electoral vote could prove decisive. The Democratic state House majority leader has said the state should consider switching to a winner-take-all electoral vote system itself as a counter if Nebraska moves to change its system.

Tim Walz touted Vice President Kamala Harris’ record of defending LGBTQ rights on Saturday night, pledging to a supportive crowd that she will advance their cause if elected president. He noted how Harris worked alongside President Joe Biden to issue executive orders protecting the rights of LGBTQ people in health care, the military and education. The organization also applauded her selection of Walz as her running mate, citing his own long record of supporting LGBTQ youth and backing same-sex marriage. Transgender youth rarely undergo gender-confirmation surgery anywhere. “President Trump will ensure all Americans are treated equally under the law regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation,” Leavitt said.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

New York CNN —The Washington Post is trying to fix one of its biggest problems: an outdated homepage loathed by its own staff. Lewis is under pressure to recapture paying subscribers and return the Post to profitability, a goal he says he is making progress on. More urgently, at the Post, the homepage redesign is a sign that the new management regime is moving quickly to make significant changes. Lewis was appointed publisher and chief executive in January and didn’t mince words about the beleaguered state of the Post. While Lewis hasn’t entirely recovered, he has used his weekly memos to tout progress in rebuilding the Post’s subscriber rolls.

Read previewVice President Kamala Harris' proposal to combat grocery inflation hasn't elicited a range of opinions from economists, and many have turned to history to dispute her idea. Last week, the Democratic presidential nominee unveiled early details of her economic platform, which included a pledge to ban grocery price gouging. In a study from May, price gouging was the second leading perceived cause of inflation among surveyed consumers. AdvertisementWhether gouging deserves the blame for inflation, some have also criticized Harris' plan as an ineffective government overreach. Pundits have alluded to the price controls under President Richard Nixon.

Harris hasn’t yet released many details about her strategy to wipe out medical debt, but policy experts say a newly implemented medical debt relief program from North Carolina could offer a roadmap. Roy Cooper announced that nearly 100 hospitals in the state had signed on to participate in the Medical Debt Relief Incentive Program, which he said will incentivize hospitals to eliminate $4 billion in medical debt for 2 million low- and middle-income patients over the next two years. At a campaign event last week in Raleigh, North Carolina, Harris thanked Cooper for canceling medical debt in his state, and Cooper introduced Harris at the convention Thursday. Hospitals will get additional federal funds if they forgive existing debt and move to prevent future medical debt. “I see medical debt as the most salient example of a health care system which isn’t working,” he said.

CNN —Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced at a news conference in Phoenix Friday that he is suspending his campaign and endorsing Trump. Kennedy insisted that he was not ending his campaign, but he noted that he will withdraw his name from appearing on ballots in swing states. If you live in a blue state, you can vote for me without harming — or helping — President Trump or Vice President Harris. Kennedy running mate Nicole Shanahan praised him following his announcement and urged him to “save our children” in a social media post. But Kennedy’s support for Trump was clear Friday afternoon.

Arizona voters will decide on Election Day whether to establish a right to abortion in the state Constitution. The ballot measure is a major victory for Democrats, who have used the issue of abortion to energize their voters. “Poll numbers for abortion rights are higher than poll numbers for Kamala Harris,” my colleague Kate Zernike, who covers abortion, told me. “In Arizona, Democrats think this ballot measure can really help them draw more voters.”A similar question will appear on the ballot in Missouri, state officials there said today. If voters pass the measure, Missouri would become the first state where voters overturned a near-total ban, radically reshaping access for millions of residents.

WASHINGTON — In the heat of the 2024 campaign season, more than 400 first-time voters from across the country gathered here in July to discuss political issues and the upcoming election — but with a focus on being polite rather than being polarized. The gathering was a so-called deliberative poll where the participants were randomly selected to produce a representative sample of young voters from the entire nation. There have been past “America in One Room” studies of the general electorate, but this was the first to specifically examine first-time young voters. And the portion of young voters who opposed drilling in the Artic wilderness increased, from 72% before to 76% afterward. 'I see that point': Young voters gain more respect for differing viewsThe polling results also showed these young voters gaining more respect for differing viewpoints, with the share of participants saying their opponents had good reasons for their positions growing from 64% before the event to 71% afterward.

An emerging movement against in vitro fertilization is driving some doctors and patients in red states to move or destroy frozen embryos. The embryo migration is most striking in Alabama, where the State Supreme Court ruled in February that embryos were “unborn children.” Since then, at least four of Alabama’s seven fertility clinics have hired biotech companies to move the cells elsewhere. A fifth clinic is working with a doctor in New York to discard embryos because of concerns about the legality of doing so in Alabama. Since the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, 14 states have passed total or near total abortion bans. And the Southern Baptists, the country’s largest Protestant denomination, voted in June to oppose I.V.F., calling for the protection of “frozen embryonic human beings.”
