When Speaker Mike Johnson opened the floor for questions at a closed-door luncheon fund-raiser in New Jersey last month, Jacquie Colgan asked how, in the face of vehement opposition within his own ranks, he planned to handle aid for Ukraine. What followed was an impassioned monologue by Mr. Johnson in which he explained why continued American aid to Kyiv was, in his view, vital — a message starkly at odds with the hard-right views that have overtaken his party. He invoked his political roots as a Reagan Republican, denounced President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia as a “madman” and conceded the issue had forced him to walk a “delicate political tightrope.”Reminded by Ms. Colgan, a member of the American Coalition for Ukraine, a nonprofit advocacy group, of the adage that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil was for good people to do nothing, Mr. Johnson replied that he kept a copy of the quotation framed in his office. “That’s not going to be us,” he assured her. “We’re going to do our job.”The exchange reflects what Mr. Johnson has privately told donors, foreign leaders and fellow members of Congress in recent weeks, according to extensive notes Ms. Colgan took during the New Jersey event and interviews with several other people who have spoken with him.

Shortly after Nikki Haley exited the presidential race, Joe Biden issued a statement welcoming her supporters to the Democratic Party. In this audio essay, Times Opinion columnist David French implores Haley fans — specifically Reagan Republicans — to join the Democratic coalition. “If you want to preserve Reagan conservatism and its ideals, its temperament, its character, its ideology,” French says, “the best way to preserve it is by ending Donald Trump’s stranglehold on the G.O.P.”(A full transcript of this audio essay will be available within 24 hours of publication in the audio player above.)

Opinion | Why Haley Voters Should Support Biden
  + stars: | 2024-03-10 | by ( David French | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Last Wednesday, a day before he delivered a rousing State of the Union address, Joe Biden issued an invitation to the roughly 30 percent of Republican primary voters who had voted for Nikki Haley in the G.O.P. After all, Trump said on Truth Social that anyone who made a “contribution” to Haley would be “permanently barred from the MAGA camp.” Biden, by contrast, acknowledged differences of opinion with Haley voters but argued that agreement on democracy, decency, the rule of law and support for NATO should unite Haley voters against Trump. Is there an argument that could persuade a meaningful number of Haley conservatives to vote for Biden? that is sprinting away from Reagan — and from Haley Republicans — as fast as MAGA can carry it. Given the power imbalance in a Trump G.O.P., that means that for the foreseeable future traditional conservatives will face a choice: conform or leave.

David Gergen: Biden just rewrote the presidential racePresident Joe Biden not only delivered perhaps the best speech of his life last night; he may have also changed the race itself. Roxanne Jones: Biden finally sounds like he’s ready to fightPresident Joe Biden finally has my attention. At the end of his speech, Biden reminded voters that he “grew up among working people” in Scranton. In his State of the Union speech, Biden had to answer the mail on all of these.

The biggest takeaway came from the reviews of voters like Lang: loyal Democrats who have raised important policy and performance issues about the president. On Thursday, these voters saw a president who was listening to their concerns, but they also said that steps in the right direction did not mean the problem was solved. In Biden’s speech, Lang saw some proof that his team is listening. She is more conservative than Biden but saw things to like in his speech, including his “commitment to democracy.”Two topics hit home. “Striking to hear President Biden call for free preschool, but not support the right of families like mine to use our own tax dollars for K-12 education,” Gurr said.

Pence announces 2024 presidential campaign

CNN —Former Vice President Mike Pence announced he’s running for president on Wednesday, setting up a battle for the Republican nomination with his former boss, Donald Trump. In a launch video released ahead of his campaign kickoff later in the day in Iowa, Pence casts himself as a Reagan Republican seeking to return America to conservative principles. Though a loyal second-in-command to Trump, Pence broke with him by refusing to overturn the 2020 election results and presiding over Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s victory on January 6, 2021. An evangelical Christian, Pence was picked to be Trump’s running mate in the 2016 election in hopes of bolstering his standing among Christian conservatives. And although some Trump supporters have spurned Pence, other Republicans have applauded Pence for his actions on January 6.

The ex-VP, long tied to Trump, would seek a return to the party's roots in aiming for the White House. "This campaign is going to reintroduce Mike Pence to the country as his own man," Pence ally Scott Reed said. "We have to resist the siren song of populism unmoored to conservative principles," Pence told the newspaper. "This campaign is going to reintroduce Mike Pence to the country as his own man," GOP operative Scott Reed told The Times. "People know Mike Pence.
Ron DeSantis in the coming weeks. Axios obtained Trump's 5-point plan which includes shaming DeSantis for his likeability and disloyalty. Trump also reportedly plans to castigate DeSantis for his likeability and for being disloyal to Trump after the former president supported his 2018 gubernatorial candidacy. "There's a pre-Trump Ron and there's a post-Trump Ron," a Trump ally told Axios of DeSantis. Despite his carefully-laid plans, Trump continues to publicly posture as being unbothered by DeSantis' rising star, all the while, launching semi-regular, rage-filled Truth Social rants targeting his likely opponent.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Republican J.D. And in interviews with NBC News after campaign events here Saturday, Vance and Ryan both spoke as if victory was within reach. And Trump endorsed Vance in a crowded GOP primary, seeming to relish the thought of elevating a high-profile convert. Vance, he joked at a September rally in Youngstown, is now “kissing my a--.”“The Trump tough guy stuff and J.D. The problems that the Republican Party needs to respond to are different.
