South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem greets former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump before he speaks at a South Dakota Republican party rally in Rapid City, South Dakota, U.S. September 8, 2023. Republican South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem on Sunday attempted to spin a controversial anecdote about killing her puppy, revealed in her upcoming memoir, into a case for her political deftness as she vies to become Donald Trump's vice presidential pick. Noem has spent the weekend dealing with ridicule from both Democrats and Republicans since those anecdotes became public. Florida Governor and former GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis posted a call to action for people to adopt rescue dogs. In March, the South Dakota governor posted an infomercial-style video for a Texas dentist appearing to act as a commercial testimony for the business, despite holding public office.

Curt Lauinger, an F.B.I. As he looked out the window, records show, a man pointed a rifle and ordered him to get out of his S.U.V. Mr. Lauinger was then forced into the back seat of his vehicle, and the man, Juan Alvarez-Sorto, along with two others — Deyvin Morales and Karla Alejandra Lopez-Gutierrez — drove off, according to court documents. The three were trying to hide from the police near Red Shirt, S.D., after a high-speed chase during a trip from Colorado in which the three had planned to distribute drugs, prosecutors said. They had pulled over and planned to carjack the next vehicle that drove by, prosecutors said, apparently to continue to elude law enforcement officers.

A multi-day system will slide across much of the country and bring the potential for tornadoes, large hail, flooding and even snow. Snow and freezing rain will fall to the north, while heavy rain and severe thunderstorms unfold on the warmer side of the system. By Tuesday, the severe threat shifts east into an area from northern Mississippi to southern Pennsylvania. One of the elements fueling the severe threat is the clash of cold air behind the system with the warm air out ahead. Baton Rouge, Louisiana, along with Corpus Christi and Del Rio, Texas, could see record high temperatures on Monday.

For the second time as governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem has been banished from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Noem’s mention of the gang, he said, was the first time he had heard of it or its possible presence on the reservation. In 2018, as a Representative in the South Dakota Legislature, she proposed legislation that would allow federal authorities to arrest people on tribal lands for state crimes. Tony Mangan, a spokesperson for the South Dakota Attorney General’s office, said the Ghost Dancers are affiliated with a motorcycle gang called the Bandidos. Around the country, tribal nations adopted the practice, and in South Dakota it became part of one of America’s most infamous massacres.

But there's some unexpected good news: The rate of new gonorrhea cases fell for the first time in a decade. Total cases surpassed 207,000 in 2022, the highest count in the United States since 1950, according to data released Tuesday. About 59,000 of the 2022 cases involved the most infectious forms of syphilis. STD testing was disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and officials believe that's the reason the chlamydia rate fell in 2020. “We are encouraged by the magnitude of the decline,” Mermin said, though the gonorrhea rate is still higher now than it was pre-pandemic.

(AP) — A Montana felon previously convicted of killing eagles to sell their parts on the black market was sentenced to three years in federal prison on Wednesday for related gun violations. U.S. District Judge Susan Watters in Billings sentenced Harvey Hugs, 60, after he pleaded guilty in September to being a felon in possession of firearms. A 2021 search of Hugs' home and vehicles found eagle parts, two rifles and ammunition, according to court documents. In 2012, he was sentenced in federal court in Montana to six months in custody for coordinating the illegal purchase of eagle feathers, tails and wings and two hawk tails, court documents show. Federal officials operate a clearinghouse that makes eagle feathers and other parts available to tribal members, authorized zoos and museums.

RAPID CITY, S.D.—Jose Hernandez set off to work one evening in January, wobbling on a refurbished bike with a deflated tire, a bag with his valuables strapped across his back. He was headed to Burger King, where he works as a cook for about $15 an hour, often on the 5 p.m.-to-midnight shift. It is a five-minute drive from the homeless shelter where he lives. But Hernandez, 45, doesn’t have a car. Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks on the stage at a South Dakota Republican party rally in Rapid City, South Dakota, U.S. September 8, 2023. The prime time speech is expected to be delivered to auto workers and other blue collar union members, the aide added. The United Auto Workers union began a strike last week against the three biggest U.S. auto manufacturers over pay and other benefits, a labor dispute that could pose significant political danger for Biden. Trump is seeking to exploit the dispute, and will try to persuade auto workers and other union members that he will be on their side if he becomes president again. Trump skipped the first Republican presidential debate in Wisconsin last month.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a South Dakota Republican party rally in Rapid City, South Dakota, U.S. September 8, 2023. WASHINGTON — Donald Trump on Friday attacked special counsel Jack Smith as a "deranged" prosecutor after his office sought restrictions on what the former president can say about his federal election interference case. "He's a deranged person," he said of Smith, who led two federal investigations into Trump that have yielded criminal indictments. Trump, who is the leading Republican candidate for the party's 2024 presidential nomination, claimed in a speech Friday night that Smith "wants to take away my rights under the First Amendment." Trump is charged with four criminal counts in that case, which alleges he perpetrated multiple conspiracies to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Is there an election coming up by any chance?”While some individual schools and colleges have implemented temporary mask requirements, there is no sign that anyone in federal or state leadership is considering widespread COVID-19 restrictions, requirements or mask mandates. “No COVID-19 public health restrictions or mask requirements are being considered by the Murphy administration," said Christi Peace, spokesperson for New Jersey Gov. It was largely the same message from Democratic governors’ offices in several other states that responded to an inquiry about whether any COVID-19 mandates were under consideration. “Currently, COVID-19 lockdowns and mask mandates are not being discussed and the governor has no plans to institute these measures,” she said. Reinstated mask requirements across the country have so far been limited to a handful of local schools and businesses.

Some legal experts say Trump’s Jan. 6 actions disqualify him for the presidency. Some legal experts say efforts to disqualify Trump could set a troubling precedent that would empower state election officials to unilaterally disqualify candidates based on their own interpretations of "insurrection or rebellion." Others say state election officials are bound to apply it when considering candidates for the ballot and can be compelled to do so by court order. Voters and groups representing them would need to persuade secretaries of state across the 50 states - many of them elected Republicans and Trump allies - to determine Trump is disqualified or to persuade judges to bar them from putting Trump on the ballot. It would require persuading or forcing election officials to keep Trump off the ballot in states governed by his Republican allies.

"Judge Chutkan has, in connection with other cases, suggested that President Trump should be prosecuted and imprisoned," the lawyers wrote in their motion asking the judge to recuse herself. Last month, the judge scheduled Trump's trial to begin March 4, 2024, which prompted Trump to blast her in a social media post as a "biased, Trump Hating Judge." If Chutkan steps off the case, it could be randomly assigned to another judge in the same court. Manhattan Supreme Court Juan Merchan ruled that he could be "fair and impartial" toward Trump despite claims by the former president that the judge had conflicts of interest in the case.

When Donald J. Trump came to South Dakota in July 2020, then a president in the middle of his re-election campaign, he stood in front of Mount Rushmore and outlined a dark vision of what he claimed his opponents on the left would do to the country. Three years, an election defeat and four indictments later, Mr. Trump returned on Friday to South Dakota for a rally, where he struck a similar message: that he was the sole bulwark keeping America from falling into ruin. “They’re just destroying our country,” Mr. Trump told a crowd of roughly 7,000, this time at a hockey arena in Rapid City, S.D. “And if we don’t take it back — if we don’t take it back in ’24, I really believe we’re not going to have a country left.”Appearing at a large-scale event for the first time since he stood for a mug shot in Georgia late last month, Mr. Trump acknowledged that his circumstances had changed. Yet he referred to the four criminal cases against him proudly — and as an applause line.

‘War Against the Children’

A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers. Library of Congress, Chronicling AmericaA precise accounting of how many children died at Native American boarding schools remains elusive.

Urrea has a weakness for melodramatic imagery: a volume of Shakespeare with a bullet lodged in its pages, a G.I. But we need to be absolutely enmeshed in a character’s consciousness to witness something on the order of Buchenwald through her eyes. During the Battle of the Bulge, in January 1945, Irene and Dorothy take a bottle of Champagne to gunners operating a howitzer cannon. Like many veterans of war, Irene and Dorothy keep their memories to themselves after they return to civilian life. Even as Urrea tells the Clubmobilers’ story, he recognizes that some parts of their experience remain impossible to share with those who weren’t there.

My dad was in the military, so moving around and living on Air Force bases was part of my life growing up. My first duty station was at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. International assignments brought me to South Korea, Japan, and ItalyI spent a year working on Osan Air Base in South Korea. In the military, working hours really depend on your positionPeople working in administration or finance have pretty standard, set schedules.
The Bismarck Trail Ranch has three homes on the property and also includes a working slaughterhouse, a covered arena, and multiple storage buildings, the real-estate listing shows. The Bismarck Trail Ranch comes with three additional properties, including a slaughterhouse and a working pen. Courtesy of Hall and HallThe property is located in Vale, South Dakota, a town of about 136 people that is 51 miles north of Rapid City.
