☆ Broadcom adds silicon AI features to speed new Trident networking chip

Devoting a portion of the silicon in Broadcom's Trident networking processors to AI improves the chip's efficiency and its ability to handle other tasks such as network security. The chip, called a Trident 5-X12, can help alleviate some of the network traffic congestion, Robin Grindley, an executive in Broadcom's Core Switching Group, said in an interview. The AI portion of the chip can be turned on after a customer builds an AI model based on the traffic in their data center. Once constructed, a form of the model is fed into the chip and it can help route the traffic. The new version of the Trident is built with 5 nanometer manufacturing technology and is currently shipping to "qualified" customers.

The deal, one of the biggest globally when announced in May 2022, was the latest in CEO Hock Tan's efforts to boost the chipmaker's software business. However, the transaction faced tough regulatory scrutiny across the world and the companies had delayed the closing date three times. Big Tech mergers such as Microsoft's (MSFT.O) now-closed $69 billion purchase of the "Call of Duty" publisher Activision have faced heightened regulatory pressure from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission under its Chair Lina Khan.

☆ Sony profit slides on chip slump, maintains PS5 sales target

Profit for the quarter was 263 billion yen ($1.74 billion). That compared with a 306 billion yen estimate from 10 analysts polled by LSEG. The conglomerate sold 4.9 million PS5 units in the second quarter, bringing sales this financial year to 8.2 million units. Sony hiked its full-year sales forecast for the games unit by almost 5% to 190 billion yen. The company maintained its full-year operating profit at 1.17 trillion yen but raised its sales and net income forecast by 2% each.
