A chemical gas leak from a rail tanker near Cincinnati prompted fears of an explosion and evacuation orders for people within at least a half-mile radius of the incident. Firefighters try to contain a dangerous chemical leak from a train car in Whitewater Township, Ohio. The threat for the community 22 miles east-northeast of Cincinnati is that the rail car tank has been heating up and will explode if it continues, Siefke said. It wasn't yet clear who owns the rail car or its cargo, officials said Tuesday night. Whitewater Township and Hamilton County officials said the situation will likely remain static overnight as they await input from environmental agencies.

Shaw had been CEO of one of the nation’s four largest freight railroads for just over two years. And he received praise from some past critics of the railroads for steps he took after the February 2023 derailment in East Palestine to improve railroad safety. Still, Norfolk’s actions related to the derailment received harsh criticism from Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigated the accident. The Justice Department on Tuesday accused Norfolk Southern, one of the country’s largest freight railroad companies, of violating federal law by delaying Amtrak passenger trains along the route between New Orleans and New York. In a complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the Justice Department said Norfolk Southern failed to give Amtrak passenger trains preference over freight trains, as it is required to do under federal law. “Norfolk Southern regularly fails to do so, leading to widespread delays that harm and inconvenience train passengers, negatively affect Amtrak’s financial performance and impede passenger rail transportation,” according to the complaint. “Americans should not experience travel delays because rail carriers break the law,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement. “Our action today alleges that Norfolk Southern violates federal law by failing to give the legally required preference to Amtrak passenger trains over freight trains.”

Mr. Mellon refused to talk and hired a former state attorney general as his lawyer. Nearly a year later, the matter was resolved quietly: Mr. Mellon agreed to return the stone, and prosecutors agreed not to bring charges.

Coursera — The online course provider stock surged 26% after Coursera posted second-quarter revenue of $170 million, which exceeded the $164 million analysts had expected, according to LSEG. 3M — The industrials giant added nearly 7% after posting second-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.93 and adjusted revenue of $6.02 billion. Charter's $13.69 billion revenue also exceeded the $13.59 billion analysts had expected.
