The H5N1 virus has become a pandemic among animals, raging through worldwide bird populations and now through US cattle herds. There, the H5N1 virus can continue operating as an avian virus, grabbing avian receptors with no need to adapt to human receptors. Two previous one-off human cases of H5N1 — one in Chile and one in Ecuador — featured respiratory symptoms. Even with its current monitoring, the CDC would probably detect sustained human spread, he said. Correction — June 4, 2024: An earlier version of this story misstated the nature of genomic sequencing of the H5N1 virus.

What Ukraine Has Lost A drone photograph shows numerous severely damaged buildings with labels highlighting residential buildings, a football field and a high school. This is the first comprehensive picture of where the Ukraine war has been fought and the totality of the destruction. More buildings have been destroyed in Ukraine than if every building in Manhattan were to be leveled four times over. In mid-May, the Russians bombed some towns in northeastern Ukraine so ferociously that one resident said they were erasing streets. “No matter how unpatriotic it may sound, there’s not much future for her in Ukraine,” Ms. Hrushkovska said.

This year, Washington finalized a long-delayed plan to give Palau hundreds of millions of dollars in aid over two decades. Hours before diplomats gathered at the U.S. Embassy in Palau to toast the agreement, the island nation was hit by an enormous cyberattack. And there were hundreds of documents detailing the close relationship between Palau and Taiwan. Palau is one of the few countries in the world that recognize Taiwan as an independent democracy. Beijing has enticed other countries, like Nauru, another Pacific nation, to sever ties with Taipei.

In recent days, Ukraine has conducted a series of drone attacks inside Russia, including one of the longest-range strikes of the war, that target radar stations used, at least partly, as early nuclear warning systems by Moscow. On Monday, Ukraine struck a radar station near the border with Kazakhstan that was more than 1,100 miles away, a Ukrainian intelligence official said. Ukrainian experts said the facility was used to detect missile threats from Asia. On Tuesday morning, the governor of the Krasnodar region of Russia reported that a Ukrainian drone was downed in the sky over the town of Armavir, which is home to two radar stations. Ukraine did not report any new strikes that day.

CNN —In recent weeks, an increasingly familiar list of Republicans has dominated the not-very-subtle competition to become Donald Trump’s running mate. Trump himself has added to the air of inevitability by floating these names in interviews and appearances over and over. Many around the campaign believe the lack of secrecy surrounding the open audition raises the possibility Trump ultimately picks someone off the public’s radar. A source confirmed Trump floated Cotton’s name during a recent private dinner, surprising some of his guests. Younger Americans are finally outspending baby boomers, former Wall Street bank analyst Meredith Whitney recently noted. That's an encouraging sign for the US economy, which most economists believe is healthy, though some bearish prognosticators have serious doubts. There are several possible explanations for these findings and numerous takeaways from them, the "Oracle of Wall Street" said. However, young Americans' spending power shouldn't be discounted, as Whitney suggested that they command relatively high salaries since they attend college at higher rates. A continued economic expansion would be especially crucial for Gen Zers and millennials, who are entering the workforce or establishing their careers.

The growing need to feed power-hungry artificial intelligence models could benefit an under-the-radar power management stock, according to Wall Street analysts. Last year, Eaton also said that data centers and IT accounted for 14% of revenues. Ahead of Eaton's quarterly print, Bank of America analyst Andrew Obin highlighted the stock as a "pure-play electrical equipment" with high-growth businesses beyond data centers. "While data center remains the strongest end market, it seems that other end markets (residential, distributed IT) improved more than expectations to drive beats," he wrote. Elsewhere, Mizuho's Brett Linzey highlighted Eaton's "extended revenue visibility" given its "mega projects" aimed at meeting reshoring and data center needs.
