Not so for one Washington state woman, who called 911 after her home was swarmed by scores of hungry raccoons. This was a first.”No wild raccoons in Washington have recently been diagnosed with rabies — a disease that kills almost every human it infects, according to the Washington State Department of Health. “At this point, it’s been determined that the raccoons haven’t committed any crimes,” McCarty told the affiliate, before adding a more serious moral coda. “Don’t feed wild animals. When wild animals have a reliable food source, they’re going to keep coming back to it.

A Kentucky couple spent six days looking for a body believed to be the highway shooting suspect that authorities have been hunting for over a week — and eventually found it by following circling vultures, they said Thursday. So capturing Couch wasn't as far fetched as it might seem, the couple said. "None of us are getting out of this world alive," Fred McCoy told NBC News. "The smell was terrible, it was horrible," said Sheila McCoy, 59. "When you got that many vultures, you've either got a livestock, a horse, a cow or you've got a human," said Fred McCoy, 67.

The new findings add to strong, but circumstantial evidence that the SARS-CoV2 virus jumped from infected animals to humans and that the market was a central site of early spread. Of the animals present at the market, rabbits, dogs and raccoon dogs are known to be susceptible to Covid-19 infections. Their analysis shows that SARS-CoV2 virus present at the market emerged at the same time as the virus from the larger pandemic, suggesting they are one and the same. The pandemic virus would have an earlier birthdate. “A lab origin is a possibility.

If dishwasher loading were an Olympic sport, I'd be on my way to Paris this summer. We've had our dishwasher for almost 2 decadesThis year will mark my family's 19th year in our New Jersey home. CNN —A furry pitch invader paused Major League Soccer play on Wednesday as a rogue raccoon ran onto the field during a match between the Philadelphia Union and New York City FC. The athletic critter ran the length of the pitch at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, deftly evading capture while sprinting stadium staff tried to apprehend it using a trash can. “We need to find him a ball because he’s moving very well in the center of midfield,” a commentator quipped during the kerfuffle, adding that it was “entertainment of its own kind.”Raquinho the raccoon was eventually captured and later released. Eric Hartline/USA TODAY Sports/ReutersThe match was paused for five minutes as crews tried and eventually succeeded in capturing the animal, dubbed “Raquinha the Raccoon” by MLS. The Union sent out an update saying that the raccoon was “put in good hands” and was safely released.

CNN —A single rabid coyote in Rhode Island is believed to have attacked two people in neighboring towns in the span of two days, state environmental officials said this week. The same animal likely attacked another person on Thursday in Scituate, about 11 miles away, officials said in a Monday news release. There has not been a human case of rabies in Rhode Island since 1940. Rabies is endemic in Rhode Island and the state has had terrestrial rabies since 1994. If someone is bitten or scratched by a wild animal, they should contact a health professional right away, the health department said.

The stand-up Beth Stelling reminds me so much of my best friend from high school. Stelling belongs to a different tradition: Her comedy emerges from an onstage character as rich and resonant as a great movie protagonist. Even if you don’t know someone like Stelling, her fully realized performance makes you feel as if you do. She once again uses him as a comic target, telling scathingly deadpan stories about his eccentricities, centering one bit on his raccoon collection. But watching her roast him you can’t help but think that some of his performance chops rubbed off on her.

I tried living like a monk for 48 hours. It's unusual for me to go 48 seconds without talking or checking my phone, let alone two days. I was inspired by the University of Pennsylvania's "monk class," actually called "Living Deliberately." I wanted to achieve that level of awareness, but my livelihood depends on my voice and three-pound work laptop. A seven-day break from Twitter and TikTok reduced levels of depression and anxiety in a small randomized trial, U.K.-based University of Bath researchers found last year.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The cost of building an artificial intelligence product like ChatGPT can be hard to measure. To keep it cool on hot days, data centers need to pump in water — often to a cooling tower outside its warehouse-sized buildings. The estimate includes indirect water usage that the companies don’t measure — such as to cool power plants that supply the data centers with electricity. It was also thirsty in Iowa, drawing more potable water to its Council Bluffs data centers than anywhere else. Its fourth and fifth data centers are due to open there later this year.

How Burmese pythons got from Asia to FloridaThe first definitive recording of a Burmese python in the Florida Everglades was in 1979. "Then I just developed this mantra over the years of don't underestimate the Burmese python," he said. Pythons have invaded the Florida Everglades and proven a formidable invasive species that may never be fully eradicated. While state-regulated programs have removed over 13,700 snakes from the Florida Everglades, they're usually the ones found near roads and canal levees. The biggest question researchers need to answer is how many Burmese pythons are actually in Florida at the moment.

Some 30 million years ago, a primitive bear roamed near a river in what is now North Dakota. A male, he probably looked like a raccoon and might have eaten like an otter. The skeleton includes the baculum, a penis bone found in many mammals that is rarely preserved. A woman brought a baby raccoon into a pet store in Maine to have its nails trimmed. The raccoon was handled and kissed by multiple customers, possibly exposing them to rabies. In order to test if the raccoon had rabies, it needed to be euthanized. Anyone with information about the woman who brought in the juvenile raccoon is requested to contact the Maine Warden Service, authorities said. "Please 'Keep Wildlife Wild'" and "If you care, leave them there," the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife reminded people.
Bat viruses have been the source of multiple health crises besides those related to coronaviruses, including recent outbreaks of Ebola, Nipah, and Marburg. Partners in risk The total area at high risk for bat viruses to infect humans more than doubled in size in Laos between 2002 and 2020. The animals, known to be susceptible to bat viruses, included raccoon dogs, bamboo rats and porcupines. As China boomed in recent decades, global demand for rubber also skyrocketed, leading to further development and deforestation here. Already, scientists have found local bats bearing viruses closely related to those responsible for the 2003 SARS and COVID-19 pandemics.
