RA’ANANA, Israel—Debbie Ziering’s son Aryeh picked up his weapon and drove south with another soldier as soon as he heard that a wave of attacks was under way on Oct. 7. Just the night before, he had been singing in the synagogue with his parents and siblings, celebrating the Jewish festival of Simchat Torah.
