That rally may not be sustainable, based on the venerable " Dow Theory ." The century-old Dow Theory looks at the relationship between the Dow Industrials and the Dow Transports , and argues that market trends must be confirmed by both groups. In other words, if the Dow Industrials are going lower, then Transports most also be falling to confirm a prolonged negative run. Right now, investors are presented with the Dow Industrials at all-time highs and Transports barely positive for the year. But there's another lesser-known S&P 500 index that you might not have heard of: the SPW. In contrast, the conventional S&P 500 allocates more weight to the biggest companies based on market capitalization. Big Tech names carry very little debt on their balance sheets, meaning that they are less affected by elevated interest rates. Bank of AmericaIn contrast, the cap-weight S&P 500 is approaching overvalued territory. Examples of SPW index funds include the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) and Goldman Sachs Equal Weight U.S. Large Cap Equity ETF (GSEW).

According to Bank of America, one area of the market is set to benefit from increased market volatility: quality stocks, or stocks with strong business models and financial fundamentals. And the cherry on top is that quality stocks — which typically become expensive during downturns — are still cheap despite their recent rally, coming out of a two-decade rut. As seen in the graph below, the high-quality factor serves as a hedge against elevated market volatility. Bank of AmericaQuality is still cheapLuckily for investors, this safe-haven area of the stock market is trading at an attractive valuation. The good news outweighs the bad Seasonality aside, the market is riding a wave of momentum, and with good reason: 1) The market "broadening" trend is very real. Wall Street still loves the ‘Magnificent Seven’

Don't get it twisted: Wall Street's love affair with the "Magnificent Seven" is alive and well. That's a greater gain than what strategists forecast for the S & P 500 as a whole — a gain of 11.9%. In a downside scenario for a stock like Nvidia, this could help minimize the damage it would do to the cap-weighted S&P 500. And third, consider international stocks, which have dramatically lagged US stocks, Geraci said. It's been a bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000, but the overall trend stays with big cap tech. Talk about timing: It launched just as the S & P 500 was recovering from the banking crisis, and MAGS has been one of the star ETF performers of the last year. A bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000 The S & P 500 had been comfortably over 4,000 from mid-2021 into mid-2022, when rising rates pushed the broad index below 4,000. This is true not just this year, but since the S & P went over 4,000 at the end of March, as has international investing. If you own the S & P 500, which has become tech-dominant, you are happy.

As megacap tech stocks continue to fuel the rally on Wall Street, investors appear to be betting even more heavily that the big run for those market leaders will continue. The small-cap Russell 2000 has dropped close to 4% against a fractional gain in the S & P 500 year to date. In broad terms, the S & P 500 could retreat to 4600 or so – about 4% down from here – and still be in a routine technical check-back to its latest launch point in early December. Betting on 'peacetime' Fed cuts Right or wrong, the market debate right now can never get far before turning into a Fed-policy-path discussion. There are plenty of stocks other than the so-called "Magnificent Seven" that are appealing right now, top money managers told CNBC on Thursday. The mega-cap tech stocks that make up the " Magnificent Seven " — Apple , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Amazon , Nvidia and Tesla — each gained at least 48% last year. They make up about a quarter of the S & P 500's total market share. There are some trades for investors looking to avoid a possible asset bubble and other potholes that could be ahead. The standard 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose even further, a function of both the rising risk-free rate and the rising spread. Buying bonds has interest rate risk. Moreover, the spread between mortgage rates and Treasuries is unusually high. Risk-free rates stay static or even rise mildly, but if the spread narrows mortgage rates could fall, a tailwind for a mortgage portfolio.

The ETF flowdown: 2023 is back on pace to be a solid year

The loudest investor chatter for months has insisted the heavyweights of the Nasdaq have been everything to the market in 2023. Sunday is the second anniversary of the all-time closing high in both the Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 indexes, which remain 12% and 4 % underwater even after their monster gains in recent months. It's relatively rare for the Nasdaq 100 – the most easily investable part of the Nasdaq and the one most reflective of the mega-cap dominance – to enter a two-year downturn. Only three of the Big Seven have outperformed the Nasdaq 100 over the past two years – Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft — while Meta Platforms has kept pace and Amazon, Alphabet and Tesla have lagged. Friday showed signs of outright rotation, the Russell 2000 up 1.3% versus a flat Nasdaq 100.

Right now, the S & P 500 is only 2.4% off its closing high on July 31. You'd think the stock market run would kill the big inflows into money market funds that happened in the first half of the year, but you'd be wrong.
