Speaking at an investor conference this week, Iger said he's giving up too much money to the Big Tech app stores that distribute Disney-owned streamers like Hulu and Disney+. "Unlike Netflix, we distribute largely through third-party app stores. App stores and app distribution are a meaningful part of many tech companies' business plans. It's also possible that Disney won't need to leave third-party app stores — or threaten to leave — in order to save money. Maybe one of them will include a way to take a bit less from one of the world's biggest video companies.

A little-known technology stock could win big from Netflix 's shift in advertising strategy. The streaming giant announced Wednesday that it plans to debut its own advertising platform and partner with companies such as The Trade Desk and Magnite as its global ad-tier reaches 40 million monthly subscribers worldwide. While the partnership may take time to ramp up, Citi's Ygal Arounian estimates that it could add $500 million in 2025 gross billings to The Trade Desk. Every 10% of business funneled through The Trade Desk by 2026 could generate 2% upside to revenues, he estimates. "We also highlight TTD's scarcity value as the only scaled independent [demand-side platform] and its leadership in the highly-coveted CTV category."

But while the company's profile in the industry has stayed constant and swaggering, behind the curtain, its business has been increasingly troubled, 10 insiders told Business Insider. Creator economy professionals mingled beneath glowing jellyfish and coral light fixtures inside Jellysmack's creator lounge during VidCon 2023. "As a startup in the ever-evolving creator economy, we are constantly testing and adapting our business model," the Jellysmack spokesperson told BI in a statement. TubiHow Tubi found a Gen-Z audienceTubi, which was acquired by Fox in 2020 for $440 million, didn't deliberately aim at Gen Z when it started in 2014. Because Gen Z spends so much time on social media, they're used to entertainment being free. "Gen Z is orienting themselves around shared interests, subculture interests. The plan is to turn fans into promotors, recognizing that Gen Z is heavily influenced by their friends' recommendations; the initiative is in beta. My thesis is not that people are going to cancel their Netflix subscriptions and go running to Tubi," Parlapiano said.

Here's what will likely be topics of discussion during Upfronts week, whether it's on stage, in the audience or in private. That dependsMedia companies just finished reporting quarterly earnings, which showed traditional TV is still lagging behind streaming and digital when it comes to ad revenue. Streaming advertising was up 22% across media companies, and now makes up 18% of total advertising. Tech companies including Snap , Roku , Google and Microsoft each saw digital advertising revenue make a comeback this past quarter. Streaming advertising revenue jumped 70%, but the overall number is much lower — just $175 million.

There may be a case to bet on technology stocks, even if interest rates remain higher for longer. While conventional wisdom suggests high rates should punish the group, investors still favor the earnings growth offered by megacap tech stocks, according to The ETF Store President Nate Geraci. "Investors are viewing megacap tech as a quality play," he told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. Even if a U.S. economic slowdown takes hold, Geraci thinks quality tech names can remain in a leadership role. "I think that causes investors to rethink making bets on companies with earnings that are far out into the future."

Usually, at the US TV upfronts — the annual event where the networks showcase their best upcoming programming in the hopes of securing big advertising commitments — the celebrities are the stars of the show. With more money being spent, advertisers are paying closer attention to what data they can use to inform their TV ad buys and prove that TV is powering their sales. It found that taking advantage of a media company's unique upfront data offerings, including retail data, was a top reason for advertisers to buy linear TV or connected TV in the upfronts, cited by 37%. US retail media CTV ad spend will increase by 86.6% this year to reach $4.19 billion, according to Emarketer. And Walmart's recent deal to acquire the TV manufacturer Vizio reflects the growing trend of retail media's convergence with TV advertising.
