Noa Argamani, a rescued hostage embraces her father, Yaakov Argamani, in Ramat Gan, Israel, in this handout image dated June 8. Israeli Army/ReutersNoa Argamani, one of the four Israeli hostages freed during Israel's Nuseirat operation on Saturday, has been reunited with her terminally ill mother. However, Argamani's father, Yaakov, said the reunion was "difficult." "This was not how I imagined the meeting would go," Yaakov said, sobbing while speaking to Galatz radio on Sunday. Despite the difficult reunion, her father said he was still grateful they met, fulfilling her mother’s wish.

The Israeli politician Benny Gantz, a key member of the country’s war cabinet, quit the government on Sunday over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war in Gaza. The resignation dealt a blow to the appearance of unity that Mr. Netanyahu was able to marshal at the start of the conflict and exposed the divisions at the top of the Israeli leadership over the future of the war and its aftermath. Mr. Gantz, a centrist figure who last month threatened to resign unless Mr. Netanyahu addressed his concerns about how the war would end and what would follow it, said his party was leaving the emergency government “with a heavy but complete heart.” He said that Mr. Netanyahu’s leadership was “preventing us from advancing to the real victory.”The move is unlikely to force Mr. Netanyahu from office — the prime minister’s government will still hold a narrow majority in Israel’s Parliament. Mr. Gantz’s exit comes as frustration mounts over the failure to decisively topple Hamas or to bring home all the hostages held in Gaza after the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on southern Israel. Mr. Netanyahu has also faced international criticism as the destruction and civilian casualties have mounted in Gaza.

CNN —The US job market showed a softer side in April when just 175,000 jobs were added, marking one of the weakest months in the past three years. It was also well shy of economists’ expectations (for 235,000 jobs added) and sharply lower than the 315,000 net gain for March. A separate report released Thursday showed that fewer job cuts were announced in May than both the month and year before. Foreign-born workers: In addition to high labor force participation rates among prime working age individuals, specifically prime working-age women, the US labor market is benefiting from a boom in immigrant workers. Some of these workforce moves typically come at the end of the school year, meaning the May jobs report and June report could show the effects.

Gerstbacher, a 50-year-old based in San Francisco, was "really unhappy" at work, he told Business Insider via email. First, he's an "older dad," and he wanted to maximize the time he could spend with his three-year-old son. "I felt that I should take the quality time now since I'll be 70 when my son graduates from high school," he said. CNN —The number of job openings in the US shrank for the second month in a row, setting a new three-year low amid further signals of cooling in the labor market. There were 8.06 million available jobs posted in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report released Tuesday. Economists were expecting job openings to register 8.36 million, according to FactSet estimates. Layoffs remain lowIn addition to the decline in job openings, other measures of labor turnover showed minimal movement in April. Job openings fell more than forecast in April, signaling a potential weakening in the labor market that could provide the Federal Reserve with more impetus to start lowering interest rates. The Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey released Tuesday showed that the level of employment vacancies slipped to 8.06 million for the month, down by nearly 300,000 from March and close to 19% lower than a year ago. The ratio of job openings to available workers edged down from 1.2 to 1, after being around 2 to 1 when openings peaked above 12 million in March 2022. Fed officials watch the JOLTS report closely for signs of labor market slack as they look for direction on monetary policy. While job openings slid, hires moved slightly higher as did separations and quits, a sign of worker confidence in the ability to move to other positions.

World No 1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the French Open with a knee injury sustained in his round of 16 win against Argentine 23rd seed Francisco Cerundolo. Although Djokovic was able to get through on painkillers and adrenaline, the extent of the problem is too great for him to continue. If Djokovic chooses to undergo surgery on the tear, he would likely miss not just Wimbledon, which begins on July 1, but also the Olympic Games and US Open later this summer. Djokovic said Monday night, after another of his miraculous comebacks, that he had been experiencing pain in his right knee for several weeks. As of Tuesday evening in Paris, there was no decision yet on whether Djokovic would undergo surgery to repair the meniscus.

Just days after Scotland’s first minister, Humza Yousaf, announced his resignation, one of his party’s most experienced politicians, John Swinney, emerged on Thursday as his likely successor after the most prominent potential challenger pulled out of the race. That crisis reached a new level of urgency this week when Mr. Yousaf terminated a coalition agreement with another party that campaigns for Scottish independence, the Scottish Greens, only to find himself facing two confidence votes he risked losing. On Monday, he said he would step down as soon as a replacement was chosen. For much of the past year, the S.N.P. has been enduring the fallout of a police investigation into the handling of funds it raised for a future referendum campaign.
