Wilson ran a 44.20 to reset the U18 men’s 400m world record and broke his own U.S. high school record en route to winning the race at the American Track League event in Gainesville, Fla. He’ll head to Paris as one of six runners in the pool for America’s 4×400 relay team. The relay pool is designed to spread out the load over two rounds. Wilson’s selection comes after a brilliant debut at the US Olympic Trials last week, where he twice broke a 400m world record. The trio of Nia Atkins, who won in a time of 1:57.36, Allie Wilson, and Juliette Whittaker completed the podium to make the Olympic team. Mu’s fall underlined the sometimes brutal nature of the US Olympic trials, which dictate that only the top three finishers will make the team for an individual event, regardless of an athlete’s pedigree and past results.
