Power demand from generative AI will soar from 46 terawatt hours to 224 TWH between this year and 2027, according to the firm's base case scenario. That's equivalent to more than 75% of the total global data center power use in 2022, or close to Spain's entire power consumption in 2022, the firm said. "We believe the rapid power demand growth from GenAI is not well understood, and not priced into a number of stocks." Among large-scale renewable developers in the U.S., AES has the largest commercial and industrial market share, according to Morgan Stanley. Apart from data center infrastructure and power providers, utilities are another part of the data center servicing ecosystem.

Companies Prysmian SpA FollowOct 30 (Reuters) - Italian cable maker Prysmian (PRY.MI) said on Monday it had signed a deal worth about 900 million euros ($954 million) with a public-private consortium to supply a submarine and land power cable system in the state of New York. Prysmian said in a statement that it will design, manufacture, construct, install and commission a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) 400 KV (kilovolt) single core cable system with XLPE insulation for Clean Path New York, a renewable energy project that is worth $11 billion in total. The joint venture between Invenergy, energyRe, and the New York Power Authority, comprises 3,800 MW (megawatt) of wind and solar power from more than 20 new resources and a 175-mile (281.64 km), underground and submarine transmission link. Works are conditionally expected to start in spring 2024. This will help it increase its adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) to around 2 billion euros ($2.1 billion) in 2027, from 1.49 billion euros last year, Prysmian said in a statement. Milan-listed shares in the company were up 2.6% by 0730 GMT, among the best performers within Italy's blue chip basket (.FTMIB). "Prysmian is uniquely placed to benefit from the opportunities presented by the structural changes arising from the convergence of the energy transition and digital transformation," Chief Operating Officer Massimo Battaini said in a statement. Annual cash flow is seen growing to between 0.9 billion and 1 billion euros in 2027 from 559 million euros last year. "Targets to 2027 are ambitious and above our estimates," Equita analyst Luigi De Bellis said in a note.

Cable makers are green investing’s dark horses

An electrical power pylon with high-voltage power lines is seen next to wind turbines near Weselitz, Germany November 18, 2022. Moving away from fossil fuels will require laying thousands of new and stronger power lines carrying electricity from source to end users. Putting the additional earnings on Prysmian’s expected EBITDA multiple for 2026 of 8 times would generate an additional enterprise value of 2 billion euros, nearly 20% above today’s 11.6 billion euros. One potential snag is that cable makers’ annual capacity for high-voltage cables is currently only 6 billion euros per year. The volume of high-voltage cable orders has risen to more than 10 billion euros last year from around 3 billion euros in 2019, according to industry and analyst estimates.

Morgan Stanley named several stocks to play Europe's investment in renewable energy — and highlighted a "once-in-a lifetime" opportunity in the electricity sector in particular. Earlier this year, the European Union raised its renewable energy targets in the face of the energy crisis that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The bank estimated the transition to green power sources will cost around 5 trillion euros ($5.5 trillion) between now and 2030. Growth opportunity "The EU and UK renewables targets imply significant growth investment opportunities for renewable developers," the bank said. Though Morgan Stanley is positive on the opportunities for renewable energy companies, it said the EU's targets would be "hard to achieve."

London CNN —Germany’s economy grew slightly last year despite battling an energy crisis sparked by Russia’s war in Ukraine. The bank predicts the German economy will stagnate this year, rather than decline, as it had previously forecast. Tobias Schwarz/AFP/Getty ImagesEither way, it’s welcome news for Europe’s biggest economy. “The German economy has been more resilient than initially feared,” Jan-Christopher Scherer, a research associate at DIW Berlin, told CNN. About 40% of German companies expect business to decline in 2023, and another 35% think it will stagnate, according to a November survey of 2,500 firms conducted by the German Economic Institute.
Rocketing energy costs are savaging German industry

“We don’t need a crystal ball to see a further weakening of German industry in the coming months. The full impact of higher energy prices will only be felt in the last months of the year,” he said. Energy prices started rising last fall, and then shot even higher when Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, sparking an energy standoff between Europe and Moscow. Energy costs at Prysmian’s six German factories are expected to soar to €20 million ($20 million) this year from just €5 million ($5 million) in 2021. “German industry, the so-called ‘Mittlestand’, the small and medium [sized] companies, are quite resilient and adaptable,” he said.
