A federal judge on Thursday issued a temporary restraining order against Florida’s surgeon general, the latest development in a legal battle over a television ad supporting the state’s abortion rights ballot measure. Earlier this month, the Florida Department of Health sent cease-and-desist letters to multiple broadcast stations that had aired the ad, threatening criminal charges against stations that didn’t stop playing it. The restraining order against Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo lasts through Oct. 29. Even before the decision, Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel had denounced the cease-and-desist letters as a violation of the First Amendment. Drug overdose deaths fell 12.7% in the 12 months ending in May, according to preliminary data released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This is the largest recorded reduction in overdose deaths,” White House officials said in a statement. Forty-one states saw decreases in drug overdose deaths in the 12 months ending May, according to the latest CDC data. Separately, CVS issued third-quarter adjusted earnings guidance between $1.05 and $1.10 per share, far weaker than the FactSet consensus estimate of $1.69 a share.
