Tokyo CNN —Japanese prosecutors have charged a US Air Force member with allegedly kidnapping and raping an underage girl just before Christmas last year, Okinawa police confirmed to CNN on Wednesday. Washington was released on bail and transferred to the Kadena US Air Base in Okinawa for custody, according to a government spokesperson. The court’s spokesperson told CNN they do not have any details regarding the airman’s legal representation. CNN —The former executive assistant of a tech CEO was found guilty Monday of murdering his boss – whom he then decapitated and dismembered – in 2020, according to a news release from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. A jury on Monday found Haspil guilty of one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree grand larceny, one count of second-degree burglary and other charges, according to the DA’s office statement. Haspil became Saleh’s assistant in May 2018, where he was tasked with a variety of responsibilities including handling Saleh’s finances – which is how he gained access to Saleh’s financial records, according to the DA’s office release. That fall, Haspil began stealing from Saleh’s companies using two separate schemes, the DA’s office stated. The next day, Haspil returned to the apartment “to dismember the body and clean up the crime scene,” according to the release.

Under the deal, he is expected to walk free after spending more than five years in British custody, most of which were spent fighting extradition to the United States. The result is an ambiguous end to a legal saga that has jeopardized the ability of journalists to report on military, intelligence or diplomatic information that officials deem secret. Enshrined in the First Amendment, the role of a free press in bringing to light information beyond what those in power approve for release is a foundational principle of American self-government. A judge on Tuesday loosened a gag order on Donald J. Trump in his Manhattan criminal case, allowing the former president to criticize witnesses who took the stand against him as well as others involved in the trial that led to his conviction. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, who presided over Mr. Trump’s seven-week trial this spring, ruled that Mr. Trump is now free to complain about the prosecution’s witnesses, including his former fixer, Michael D. Cohen. Washington CNN —Hunter Biden’s Washington, DC, law license has been suspended, according to a newly released order from a local court that pointed to his recent conviction on three gun crimes. The order was issued by Chief Judge Anna Elizabeth Blackburne-Rigsby of the DC Court of Appeals, which is the highest appellate court in DC and oversees the DC Bar. It is typical for bars in other states to reciprocate law license suspension or disbarment orders, meaning Biden’s license is also likely to soon be suspended in any other state where he is licensed. Biden has asked for a new trial in the gun case. During closing arguments in Biden’s gun trial, one of the prosecutors described him as a “Yale-educated defendant,” referring to the school where he earned his law degree.

New York CNN —Prosecutors are urging the US Justice Department to file criminal charges against Boeing for safety issues surrounding its 737 Max, although top Justice Department officials haven’t made a final decision, a source familiar with the development tells CNN. And this month a group of those family members wrote a letter to the Justice Department urging Boeing be hit with the maximum possible $24.9 billion fine. The charges against Boeing don’t mean any Boeing executive will face charges as an individual. It has posted core operating losses of $31.9 billion since the start of the 20-month grounding of the 737 Max that followed its second fatal crash in 2019. But if the company faces criminal charges, a new settlement is the most likely outcome.

Cannon did not seem inclined to approve the limitations on Trump’s speech but did not immediately issue a ruling. The judge also heard arguments on Trump’s long-shot motion alleging that the special counsel’s office is being improperly funded.
