Today, the recently-turned 90-year-old’s work looks a little different – taking place mostly indoors, and with a different crowd. Through her program called “Roots & Shoots,” Goodall empowers young people to create change within their communities. CNN spoke with Goodall recently during a trip to South Africa, where she observed some of the projects local Johannesburg students are heading up as part of Roots & Shoots. Goodall: I think it’s really important, this exchange of information from the elders to the youngers. Goodall: When I began Roots & Shoots in Tanzania in 1991, it was because I was meeting young people then who had lost hope.

Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative has partnered with CNN to drive awareness and education around key sustainability issues and to inspire positive action. CNN —Renowned primatologist Jane Goodall turned 90 on Wednesday—and to mark the occasion, 90 female photographers have put their work up for sale for 90 days. The Jane Goodall Foundation, which works to protect chimpanzees and their habitat, will receive 60% of the proceeds. “Jane Goodall did more than just redefine our understanding of the relationship between humans and animals; she shattered barriers and opened doors for women everywhere,” she added. The British animal behaviorist is known for her enduring and exceptionally detailed research on the chimpanzees of Gombe Stream National Park.

Romantic kisses have long been celebrated in songs, poems and stories, commemorated in art and film. Modern scholars therefore concluded that romantic kisses likely originated in India. Across thousands of cuneiform tablets kissing isn’t the most mentioned topic, “but it is attested regularly,” he said. But Arbøll and Rasmussen suspected that romantic kissing became accepted in Bronze Age Europe, and not because of migration alone. Even today, many cultures shun romantic kissing, Arbøll and Rasmussen reported.

When I caught up with Jane Goodall in 2019, she was calling on consumers and businesses to make responsible choices and protect the natural world. Jane Goodall is not a fan of television. In her limited free time, this renowned British primatologist and environmentalist may occasionally watch a wildlife documentary by her friend David Attenborough, or, after a hard day, “something mindless,” as she said in a recent video interview. But usually, she doesn’t tune in. But the high-spirited protagonist is Jane Garcia, a 9-year-old of Filipino and Mexican heritage with an insatiable curiosity. “I’m her hero,” Goodall explained, adding that young Jane, who adorns her walls with articles and photos, has “many bits and pieces from my life in her room.”

In 2019, Cambodia supplied 8,571 of the 33,818 research monkeys imported to the U.S., or 25%. In 2021, the number of monkeys from Cambodia more than doubled to 18,870, making up nearly 60% of the 31,844 research monkeys brought to America. Earlier this year, long-tailed macaques and pig-tailed macaques were listed as endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The decades long effort by animal rights groups to derail the monkey trade has made some impact. The incident shined a rare spotlight on the monkey trade, which largely goes on outside the view of the public.

While we know parrots can mimic human language, studies show they actually have an understanding of that language. It also becomes difficult to compare between species since most intelligence tests or tasks are designed for specific animals. Animals evolve certain kinds of cognitive abilities to deal with pressures in their natural habitat, said Virginia Morell, author of "Animal Wise." We also tend to underestimate the brainpower of animals by relying too much on intelligence tests based on what humans are capable of. The good news is "we're getting a better idea of how animals think and experience the world," Morrell said.
