Chinese arms sales in the Middle East have increased by 80% over the past decade, a result of Beijing's expanding relationships there and its willingness to deliver arms faster and with fewer stipulations than Washington. Faptul că Sri Lanka a permis accesul navei în apele sale teritoriale, deși ea fusese respinsă de alte două țări, a provocat furia cetățenilor. Nava ancorată în largul portului Colombo a anunțat pe 20 mai un incendiu la bord, produs din cauza unei scurgeri la un container de substanțe chimice. Vasul de 186 de metri transporta 1.486 de containere cu câte 25 de tone de acid azotic, dar și alte substanțe chimice și produse cosmetice, încărcate din portul indian Hazira, pe 15 mai.

Soldații au început operațiunea de curățenia pe plajele din Sri Lanka, însă dacă nava se scufundă situație devine mult mai complexă. "Cea mai bună opțiune a noastră este să curățăm plajele și estimăm că această operațiune va dura câteva săptămâni, dacă nu câteva luni", a declarat președintele Autorității de Protecție a Mediului din Sri Lanka.
