Thailand has been under a caretaker government since March and its new parliament has been deadlocked for weeks after anti-establishment election winners Move Forward were blocked by conservative lawmakers, leaving populist heavyweight Pheu Thai to lead a new effort. Srettha said on Monday Pheu Thai had failed to secure the outright majority it had targeted, so its only chance of governing was in partnership with some rivals it had vowed not to work with. Still, he seems determined and confident to follow through this time, however, with widespread speculation that Pheu Thai's alliance with its enemies is part of a behind-the-scenes deal Thaksin may have struck to allow his return. Pheu Thai has denied Thaksin's involvement in its bid to form a government and the former leader has for months denied conspiring with the generals who led coups against him and sister Yingluck Shinawatra in 2006 and 2014. "Tomorrow, at 9 a.m., I want permission to come back to live on Thai soil and breathe the air with other Thai people," Thaksin said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

CNN —British billionaire and owner of the Tottenham Hotspur football club Joe Lewis was indicted on insider trading charges by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the office announced Tuesday. In a video posted to social media, US Attorney Damian Williams accused Lewis of orchestrating a “brazen insider trading scheme” between 2013 and 2021, passing confidential trading tips to his “romantic partners, his personal assistants, his private pilots, and his friends,” helping them make millions of dollars. On other occasions, Lewis allegedly pressed his personal assistants and romantic partners to trade on the information he provided as soon as possible. Lewis is the majority owner of the Premier League football team, Tottenham Hotspur, and the founder of private equity company Tavistock Group, which invests in more than 200 companies across 13 countries, according to its website. BANGKOK, May 9 (Reuters) - Thailand's billionaire former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Tuesday he would return home in July after 17 years in self-imposed exile, just days ahead of an election his party is expected to win. Although Thaksin, arguably Thailand's most influential and divisive former leader, has failed to make good on numerous pledges to return, his remarks on Twitter were the first time in recent years that he has set a timeframe. The latest surveys show parties in the ruling, military-backed coalition far adrift of Pheu Thai and another opposition party, Move Forward. In a later Twitter comment, Thaksin said he would not "be a burden to Pheu Thai" and his return would follow legal processes. But his family and business clique is reviled by some of Thailand's most powerful families and institutions, including the military.

CNN —An English Premier League footballer who was arrested on suspicion of child sex offenses in July 2021 will not face further action or prosecution, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed Friday. CNN is unable to name the player or his former club as UK law stipulates that his identity cannot be disclosed. A CPS spokesperson said: “After careful consideration, we have concluded that this case does not pass our legal test. “However, where our legal test is not met we cannot bring a prosecution, no matter how serious the allegations are. The CPS’ decision to not prosecute implies there was not a realistic prospect of conviction.
JOHANNESBURG, March 2 (Reuters) - Africa's biggest pay TV company, MultiChoice Group (MCGJ.J), said on Thursday it had entered into an agreement with U.S.-based media conglomerate Comcast (CMCSA.O) to create a pan-Africa video streaming platform. The new streaming service, which will be built on MultiChoice's streaming platform Showmax, will be 70% owned by the company, it said. While MultiChoice has the biggest market share in pay TV in Africa, it has been struggling to penetrate deeper with Showmax due to competition from Netflix (NFLX.O), Amazon's (AMZN.O) streaming service and Disney (DIS.N). With the streaming companies now training their guns on sports rights in Africa, MultiChoice is being threatened in a market in which it has been a leader. The new streaming service will combine MultiChoice's accelerating investment in local content with an extensive pipeline of international content licensed from NBCUniversal and Sky, the company said.

One of those is The Eclipse, which cost $700 million to build and was once the biggest in the world. Like other Russian oligarchs, Roman Abramovich had seemingly scrambled to avoid sanctions and that included quickly moving his superyachts to more friendly waters. Abramovich's 553-foot-long flagship is The Eclipse, estimated to have cost $700 million when built. After sanctions were initially dropped by the UK against Abramovich following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, his second "smaller" $600 million superyacht, Solaris, left Barcelona, Spain, and moved to Montenegro. While the superyacht Eclipse was photographed in Turkish waters in early August, it was once docked at Manhattan's Pier 90 and Robert Johnson was able to get some pictures.
