Opinion | Trump Is at Odds With NATO — and Reality
  + stars: | 2024-02-15 | by ( Paul Krugman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There’s been widespread attention on Donald Trump’s asserting that he would refuse to defend NATO allies he considers “delinquent” and even saying he might encourage Russia to attack them. A lot of the conversations I’ve heard have focused on the policy implications — on what it would mean for America to abandon its treaty obligations and treat NATO as a protection racket. But if you ask me, we haven’t given enough attention to exactly what Trump said — and what it says about his grasp on reality. Honestly, I’d love to spend this campaign talking only about policy; wonkery is my happy place. For Trump often gives the impression of living in his own reality.

They expose decades of American corporate philosophy gone awry. A good American company isn’t just a vehicle for financial returns; it is first and foremost an employer, a contributor to economic and/or technological innovation, and a source of US power. But it’s clear that what Boeing — and the entire American corporate body politic — needs is nothing short of a philosophical counterrevolution. Over these three decades of plenty for Boeing’s shareholders, the company’s staff was asked to penny-pinch. Boeing’s stock cratered, and France’s Airbus , a rival once colloquially known as “Scare Bus,” started to eat the American company’s lunch .

What’s My D.E.I. Training?My Own Life.

Would you tell us how you are prepared to work effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders from backgrounds that are different from your own, and to contribute to our commitment to D.E.I.? I am not comfortable disclosing personal information (such as a non-visible disability, background as an immigrant, queer identity, etc.). I commended their commitment to D.E.I., not least because of the range of expertise and complementary skills it brings together. Do some research about different ways to answer this question, and think through how you can answer them using your own voice and perspective. But if there is something worth preserving in this relationship, tell your friend how her comments make you feel.

From a bird’s eye view, the state of affairs among MAGA Media diehards as it sits today is remarkable. In fact, right-wing media stars have far more power over the GOP’s direction than most of its actual leaders, like Mitch McConnell. The right-wing media kingdom thrives when Democrats are in office and there are political opponents whom they can demonize. That’s not to say the right-wing media machine holds no power. And polling indicates that a good chunk of the country has bought some of the nonsense MAGA Media has been relentlessly selling.

Opinion | Netanyahu Is Turning Against Biden
  + stars: | 2024-01-19 | by ( Thomas L. Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
It looks as if President Biden will be running in two races this year: one in America against Donald Trump and one in Israel against Benjamin Netanyahu. Maybe Trump could name Netanyahu his running mate and we could save a lot of time. Biden’s support for the Israeli leader is costing him with his own progressive base, while Netanyahu is now turning on Biden in ways that could win Trump fresh support from right-wing American Jews. Because at a nationally televised news conference on Thursday, Netanyahu made clear something he only hinted at in recent weeks. So vote for me, even if I messed up on Oct. 7 and the Gaza war is not going all that great.

Opinion | History Argues for Disqualifying Trump
  + stars: | 2024-01-18 | by ( David French | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
My newsletter two weeks ago focused mainly on the legal argument for disqualifying Donald Trump from the presidency on the basis of the text and history of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Today, by contrast, I will make the case that even the consequences argue for Trump’s disqualification. Or, put more directly, that the consequences of not disqualifying the former president are likely to be worse than those of disqualifying him. This is the lesson of history both recent — the Trump era and Jan. 6, 2021 — and more distant. I addressed these points briefly in a short post for our new Opinion blog, but they deserve more attention.

Trump Testifying Is a Test All Its Own

Since the trial began in late September, Trump has been fined twice by Judge Arthur Engoron for breaking a gag order that bars him from making public comments about the judge’s staff, stormed out of the courtroom and been made to watch as two of his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, testified this week. His daughter Ivanka Trump is slated to testify on Tuesday. Both sons held the title of executive vice president after their father was elected president. Eric Trump, who maintained more direct involvement in the company, provided more detailed testimony and was at times chippy in his responses to prosecutors who sought to tease out his specific role. During testimony on Friday, he acknowledged he was aware of the Trump Organization's statements of financial condition as far back as 2013 after repeatedly denying knowledge of them.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign intelligence chief said on Wednesday that the issue of support for Ukraine was becoming toxic in the United States and that the divisions would deepen ahead of next year's U.S. presidential election. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year, the United States and the European Union have made more than $160 billion in commitments to Ukraine, including tens of billions of dollars in weapons. Republican lawmakers' ouster of House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy has raised questions about the future of aid to Ukraine. The United States has also repeatedly urged Kyiv to do more to tackle corruption, CNN reported this month. Naryshkin, who has served as Russia's foreign spy chief since October 2016, said the ouster of McCarthy illustrated the "malignancy" of the Ukraine issue in the U.S. body politic.

In this context, many partisan elites have political incentives to take, or at least refrain from pushing back on, relatively extreme partisan positions. Those I queried repeatedly cited the role of the two-party winner-take-all system in exacerbating polarization in this country. Iyengar cited two other “big differences between the U.S. and the other industrialized democracies”:The U.S. is the outlier, in the sense that we are the one case without a major public broadcaster. In other words, our democracy has always been contested and political polarization has often been intense. Foner shares the view that the two-party system fosters polarization, noting that “it may even be that the political system produces polarization, even though on many issues Americans may not be as divided as appears on the surface.”

With her sweeping indictment of former President Donald Trump and over a dozen co-conspirators, the Fulton County, Ga., district attorney Fani Willis is now set to prosecute her case in a court of law. The indictment should be situated in the broader arc of American political development, particularly in the South. That history justifies using the criminal justice system to protect the democratic process in Georgia — a critical swing state — for elections now and in the future. The period after the American Civil War entrenched many of America’s political ills. Suffering minimal political disabilities, they could muster enough power to “redeem” Southern governments from biracial coalitions that had considerable sway to remake the South.

This means agencies creating the wildland-urban interface or WUI — where human settlements meet the natural environment — are not ultimately responsible for protecting it. By my fifth year in firefighting, I’d seen plenty of wildfires and structure fires, and wildfires threatening structures. To understand what Musk did to Twitter, we shouldn’t exaggerate the virtue of Twitter before Musk any more than we should exaggerate the health of our body politic before Trump. Even before Musk, Twitter had become a toxic force in American culture, so toxic that I wrote last year it might be beyond repair. It was also the best app for seeing the thoughts of journalists, politicians and scholars in real time, sometimes to our detriment. He restored several banned accounts while stripping thousands of journalists, politicians and others of the blue verification badges that confirmed their identities. Instead, he allowed anyone to buy a blue check mark by subscribing to a premium service, Twitter Blue, that also boosted the visibility of some subscribers’ posts.

But I don’t want to discuss Roberts’s majority opinion as much as I do Justice Elena Kagan’s dissent. Kagan wrote something unusual. “From the first page to the last, today’s opinion departs from the demands of judicial restraint,” Kagan wrote. To say that the Supreme Court can violate the Constitution is to reject the idea that the court is somehow outside the constitutional system. For Congress, especially, to exercise its authority to discipline the court when it oversteps its bounds.

In conclusion, they argue,It is important to recognize that Trump was no puppet master and that his followers were far more than puppets. Instead, he was the unifier, activator, and enabler of his followers during the dark events of Jan. 6, 2021. The absence of a point at which Trump instructed his supporters to assault Capitol Hill makes the assault on Capitol Hill no less his responsibility. It remains unknown whether Trump will be charged in connection with his refusal to abide by all of the legal requirements of democratic electoral competition.

‘R.M.N.’ Review: A Bleak Diagnosis for Romania

Deep into “R.M.N.,” an anatomy of the human condition, this powerhouse of a movie gets deeper, creepier and unnervingly familiar. At that point, dozens of residents in a Romanian village have gathered for an impromptu town hall. I’ve called the movie an anatomy, but this scene is more of an autopsy. “R.M.N.” is set in motion by Matthias (Marin Grigore), a hulking brute who stalks the movie like a threat. He moves back in with his wary wife and young son, and pursues and beds a former lover.

A third man involved in siphoning funds from the wall project, Colorado businessman Tim Shea, won't be sentenced until June. Kolfage, Badolato and Shea were not pardoned by Trump, leaving them to face the prospect of years in prison. As money poured into the cause, Kolfage and his partner, Shea, turned to Bannon and Badolato for help creating a nonprofit, We Build the Wall, Inc. "The fraudsters behind We Build The Wall injured the body politic," she said. Some sections of a border barrier were built by We Build the Wall on private lands, but the nonprofit is now defunct.
AI Technology has advanced rapidly and gained popularity in recent years. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt told ABC News the technology has promise, but there are concerns. He said the industry has to work to find "guardrails" to prevent negative impacts on democracy. Schmidt, who was Google's CEO from 2001 to 2011 and the company's executive chairman from 2011 to 2015, laid out the promise and peril of AI technology during the interview. The tech leader said the entire industry needs to come together to figure out appropriate "guardrails" because the technology is only going to get bigger.
Why do people buy crackpot conspiracy theories?

When it comes to the spread of cockamamie conspiracy theories, Twitter was a maximum viable product long before Elon Musk paid $44 billion for the keys. The more you think you're right all the time, a new study suggests, the more likely you are to buy conspiracy theories, regardless of the evidence. It'd be better, or at least more reassuring, if conspiracy theories were fueled by dumb yahoos rather than self-centered monsters. Still, most scientists thought conspiracy theories weren't worth their time, the province of weirdos connecting JFK's death to lizard aliens. Pennycook's findings also suggest an explanation for why conspiracy theories have become so widely accepted.
Rep. Adam Schiff said Russia's Vladimir Putin made a "calculated" choice to only swap Brittney Griner. Other Americans, like Paul Whelan, remain in Russian custody despite efforts to get them home. Putin made a one-for-one swap for arms dealer Viktor Bout to "roil the American" people, Schiff said. Paul Whelan and Marc Fogel remain held in Russia. And I'm so impressed with both the Whelan and Fogel families for their gratitude that one American is free," Schiff said.

HISTORIC LOWSaudi ties with the United States and the wider West are still at a historic low point. When Saudi Arabia consequently took its security into its own hands with its war in Yemen, it saw Western criticism as hypocritical.
