The In-n-Out logo is displayed on the front of an In-n-Out restaurant on October 28, 2021 in Pleasant Hill, California. The new ranking doesn't surprise LaShawn Davis, a leadership and workplace culture expert who founded and runs consulting firm The HR Plug. Davis has worked in human resources for more than a decade, and says it's clear why In-N-Out Burger rivals those tech companies when it comes to leadership and culture. "It starts with the CEO," Davis tells CNBC Make It. In-N-Out's CEO is Linsi Snyder, 42, who took over her family's business at age 27 after a series of family deaths.

Jennifer Forness spent last Mother’s Day in tears. Because her husband had to work, Ms. Forness, an executive assistant who lives in Mount Pleasant, S.C., took their son, now 2, to visit her parents who live outside Philadelphia. For Mother’s Day this year, Ms. Forness, 36, and five girlfriends who are also mothers, are planning to check into Wild Dunes Resort, a hotel about 16 miles east of Charleston, for an overnight stay. “And we are going to have drinks.”Mother’s Day has long come with connotations that mothers spend it with the very people who made them so — and it usually involves brunch, cards and flowers (or floral prints). Yet some mothers are shedding those expectations and doing whatever they want — including shedding their families.

The 2024 Subaru Ascent Touring from the driver's seat. Benjamin Zhang/Business InsiderThe Subaru Ascent delivers a pleasant and reassuring driving experience. The continuously variable transmission is the weakest point in Ascent's driving experience and its drive train. The noise, reminiscent of a dying torque converter on a traditional automatic, disappears once the vehicle reaches normal operating temperature. With that said, Subaru's Lineartronic unit is one of the most capable CVTs on the market and is able to provide a serviceable approximation of a traditional automatic transmission.

Case in point: the PowerPoint party, where people get together to show each other presentations on various topics in the name of having fun. It's a chance to be creative and turn something you do at work into something silly and social. The rise of the PowerPoint party also speaks to the workification of our day-to-day lives. Perhaps it's no surprise that young adults who had their childhood activities scheduled down to the minute are embracing the PowerPoint party. Gadd’s retelling of his real-life encounters with a stalker through the fictional Donny Dunn in “Baby Reindeer” is also a story of trauma and healing. Making new friends can feel more daunting when you're past the stages of playgrounds, school sports teams, and dorm rooms. And the average person loses two social ties, including friends, when they get into a romantic relationship. As a psychologist and expert on human connection, I know that the people who are most successful in building and rebuilding their social circles are the ones who don't wait for new friends to come to them. I'd love to stay in touch, if you're open to it. People tend to be particularly open to building a connection when some sort of foundation is already in place.

At the peak of the so-called sharing economy, customer surveys were all-powerful. The glut of customer surveys has created an additional problem for marketers. "We ask for customer feedback on these things all the time, but it's hard for a customer to give you immediate feedback, because a customer doesn't know what quality is yet."

On a cool, windy day in February, two big white dogs escaped from a well-known nonprofit farm in Westchester County and ended up on a public footpath deep in a New York State park. They encountered a 10-pound miniature poodle on a leash. The larger dogs attacked, killing the poodle and then severely injuring its owner. Acting on the recommendations of state law, a local judge ordered the dogs to be euthanized. The farm, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, which is connected to Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Pocantico Hills, filed an appeal on Thursday to stay the dogs’ euthanization.

Nike’s new Olympic outfit designs for the US women and men were revealed last week, and the track and field uniforms have rightly been met with intense criticism. Just look at what Caitlin Clark, Dawn Staley and this year’s women collegiate basketball players did for the NCAA. For the uninitiated, prior to the settlement the women were earning as little as 40% of what the men were paid, despite winning four World Cup championships. A woman, Simone Biles, is the most decorated gymnast of all time, winning an astounding 37 World and Olympic medals… and she’s not done competing. Instead, while male athletes are simply referred to as “athletes,” we are “women athletes” who must shave and trim, wax and pluck our way into the hearts and minds of… men.
