You can't argue with a market making new record highs, though it's fair game to interrogate the tape about its assumptions and intentions. With the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing above 40,000 for the first time Friday and the S & P 500 settling above 5,300 after hitting a fresh all-time high Wednesday, the advice of history suggests not overthinking it. Keith Lerner, strategist at Truist, marks up a long-term S & P 500 chart to show times when it was at an all-time high. Brian Belski, strategist at BMO, last week lifted his year-end S & P 500 target to a Street-high 5,600 . And, quite remarkably, the stock market low of October 2022 occurred at an S & P 500 forward P/E above 15, with unemployment below 4% and in mid-economic expansion.

The actress and stunt woman Susan Backlinie, whose portrayal of a violent death as the first shark attack victim in the opening scene of the blockbuster movie “Jaws” terrified moviegoers, died on Saturday. Ms. Backlinie died at her home in California, her agent, Sean Clark, said on Sunday. “Jaws,” the 1975 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, memorably features Ms. Backlinie in a scene in which she played a skinny-dipper, Chrissie Watkins, who runs along the beach and dives into the water for a nighttime swim. The placid scene is shattered as she is suddenly pulled under the water. She screams while being violently thrashed by an unseen great white shark and tries desperately to cling to a clanging buoy only to be pulled below the water one final time.

This upcoming Mars simulator mission won’t require that you be astronaut-ready. During my monthslong space mission, I was able to put everything on autopay on my credit cards or through my credit union. But once you set your expectations about the limited space you’ll have and the protracted period of time you’ll be gone, you’ll probably be fine. Finally, in your year on board the Mars simulator, you will very likely miss some of the things that I missed most. As soon as the spacecraft hatch was opened after landing from my ISS mission, I smelled grass.

As they complied and disappeared through the door, the block fell silent again. It was the opening night of Frog Club, the first restaurant involving the chef Liz Johnson since the very public implosion of her marriage to Will Aghajanian, with whom she ran the acclaimed Los Angeles restaurant Horses. Occupying the historic space formerly home to Chumley’s, Frog Club has been veiled in secrecy. Only a 12-minute stiltedly lo-fi YouTube video announced its official opening, and a sparse website offered just an email address for requesting reservations. With Ms. Johnson and Mr. Aghajanian in the middle of a contentious divorce, it’s even unclear who owns the restaurant.

It allows the city to suspend a landlord’s rental license if police answer four or more “nuisance” calls in a year. Minnesota law meanwhile prohibits landlords from limiting or preventing calls for emergency services and also preempts local ordinances penalizing landlords over such calls. She later learned the calls ran afoul of Peoria’s nuisance ordinance. Last year, Maryland prohibited landlords from evicting tenants over the number of emergency calls to their addresses, as well as prohibited cities and counties from penalizing landlords for emergency calls. Jose Cruz Guzman, who serves on the board of Minneapolis’ Sky Without Limits Cooperative, said emergency calls to an apartment would prompt support from fellow residents.

MILAN, N.H. (AP) — Some of the Northeast’s best young ski jumpers took flight at the country’s oldest ski club on Sunday, continuing a comeback for the once-popular winter sport featuring speed, skill and sometimes spills. The Eastern Ski Jumping Meet took place at the Nansen Ski Club in the shadow of one of the nation's oldest jumps during Milan’s 102nd annual winter carnival in northern New Hampshire. They built the 172-foot (51-meter) “Big Nansen” jump in 1937 with government help and hosted Olympic trials a year later. In 2011 ski jumping returned to the collegiate level, welcoming women jumpers for the first time. Most of the people I see at (ski jump) clubs, especially the younger kids, are mostly girls,” she said.

The October jobs report — with the economy adding just 150,000 jobs and the unemployment rate ticking up to 3.9% — was a disappointment. Of particular notice, the unemployment rate has increased by half a percentage point over the past six months. A simple way to show that things are still in balance is to look at Okun's law, a relationship between movements in the unemployment rate and economic activity. The historical record shows that once it rises half a percentage point, the unemployment rate tends to rise even more. The unemployment rate is already above the Fed's year-end forecast of 3.8% — the first time that's happened since March 2022.

But why does Gabe seem to be reaching toward the distressed woman — something he had been instructed never to do — as she teeters on the edge, then falls? The dead woman, Amanda, narrates some of the chapters from beyond the grave. She wants to make something clear. The book begins with Margo, an outwardly cheerful librarian with a big secret: In her previous job, she was a nurse with a knack for murdering her patients. With her fake name and new identity, she seems to have gotten away with it.

Heavy rain and snow that could snarl morning travel in parts of the Eastern United States on Wednesday were expected to end by the afternoon and give way to a placid Thanksgiving for much of the nation, forecasters said. A storm that began late Monday and continued overnight Tuesday was expected to leave up to three inches of rain in some areas from the Gulf Coast through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast. Snowfall of up to six inches was possible in parts of New Hampshire and northern Maine, according to the National Weather Service, which would create what the forecasters called a “white Thanksgiving.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday said it struck down the Biden administration's decision to deny small refiners "hardship waivers" that exempt them from nation's biofuel mandates, in a win for the refining industry. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit found in favor of refineries that challenged the EPA's decision, including Ergon, Calumet Shreveport and Placid. Under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), oil refiners must blend billions of gallons of biofuels into the nation's fuel mix, or buy tradable credits from those that do. The EPA can, however, award exemptions to some small refiners if they prove that the obligations cause them undue harm. Refiners, meanwhile, have long argued that the nation's ethanol mandates impose unfair costs on fuel producers, and can threaten the viability of small plants.

But on special dates scattered throughout the year, skywatchers can catch a multitude of flares as meteor showers burst in the darkness. The next event is the Leonids, which lasts until Dec. 2 but reaches its peak tonight, on Friday, Nov. 17, into the morning of Saturday, Nov. 18. Meteor showers occur when our planet runs into the debris fields left behind by icy comets or rocky asteroids going around the sun. The regularity of orbital mechanics means that any given meteor shower happens at roughly the same time each year, with the changing phases of the bright moon being the main variable affecting their visibility. This year’s show should be a more placid 15 meteors per hour or so, as the Earth hits debris fields released from its parent body, comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle.

The octogenarian president is increasingly coming under scrutiny over his ability to serve a full second term if he wins in November 2024. But the trauma seizing Washington will soon intrude, transfixing the nation in a tumultuous 2024 election. The turmoil in the Republican Party is creating the kind of dysfunction and extremism that could turn off general election voters next year.
