Santiago, Chile CNN —How do we mourn the death of one solitary tree, when whole forests burn down? I planted it almost three quarters of a century ago, when I was just 7 years old. If I never kept that promise to my tree, it was never far from my mind as the years passed. In all likelihood, that tree, planted by me as a child, has now been reduced to cinders. It’s a reminder to pay homage and give thanks to each and every tree that succumbs to this climate debacle.

CNN —A Chilean national who’s been wanted in that country in the killing of leftist singer-songwriter Victor Jara 50 years ago is now in custody in Florida, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said. Pedro Barrientos was arrested last week during a traffic stop in Deltona, Florida, ICE announced Tuesday. Barrientos, a former military officer, was charged by a Chilean judge in 2012 in the brutal 1973 killing of Jara. Chilean singer Victor Jara was tortured and killed during the country's military dictatorship in 1973. To the Editor:Re “The Coup That Shattered Democracy in Chile 50 Years Ago” (news article, Sept. 15):Thank you for telling the story of the Sept. 11, 1973, coup in Chile. I write to note the role of the House of Representatives in shining a light on the United States’ activities surrounding the coup. documents regarding the death of President Salvador Allende during the coup; the ascension of Gen. Augusto Pinochet; and human rights violations by General Pinochet’s henchmen. In May 2016, I led a bipartisan congressional delegation to Chile, where we visited the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. It was emotional and gratifying to see on display some of the documents that we had declassified, which have helped bring the truth to light.

☆ ‘El Conde’ Review: His Bite Is Worse

Pablo Larraín’s black-and-white horror spoof “El Conde” is founded on a ferocious sight gag: the former dictator Augusto Pinochet soaring into the night on a quest for human blood. This Pinochet, played with imperious cruelty by Jaime Vadell, was once a rebel-eating French royalist who sailed to South America in search of fresh meat. It’s a comic premise — what, is this part of the “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” extended universe? Larraín’s version of the man did that, too, with just one tweak: He blends his victims into a smoothie. And Larraín has resurrected him to drag him into the light.

Thousands were killed, and hundreds of thousands fled the country under Pinochet’s dictatorship, which lasted for 17 years and was maintained through violence. The protagonist of “Chile ’76” is Carmen (Aline Küppenheim), a regal woman of middle age. She’s a grandmother and a career flight attendant who now lives a comfortably bourgeois lifestyle with her husband in Santiago. Carmen occupies her time alone with charitable work, guided by the sanguine priest of the town, Father Sánchez (Hugo Medina).
