It is getting tougher for people taking expensive medicines to get financial help from drugmakers. Johnson & Johnson , Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies are scaling back programs that cover the copayments of patients or provide free drugs. The programs have been costing drugmakers billions of dollars a year and have been increasing as health plans seeking to control their own spending have tried to take advantage of the assistance.
WHEELING, W.Va.—Democrat Joe Manchin has served the Mountain State for decades, as secretary of state, then governor, then senator. But the state’s hard-right turn and the emergence of formidable GOP challengers have thrown his political future into jeopardy, with some voters questioning whether he deserves another term. Mr. Manchin hasn’t said whether he plans to run for re-election. The state’s current GOP governor, Jim Justice, jumped into the race on Thursday, a crucial recruit for Senate Republican leaders. Another Republican, Rep. Alex Mooney , has also entered the field with the backing of some prominent conservatives, setting up what is expected to be a hard-fought primary.
PITTSBURGH—Rabbi Jeffrey Myers appeared as Moses at the Calvary Episcopal Church Christmas pageant this month, alongside a baby Jesus and a live camel. In the spirit of the production, the Tree of Life rabbi carried a Styrofoam likeness of the Ten Commandments up the aisle of the soaring Gothic church and then sang a verse from Deuteronomy. Afterward, both congregations ate latkes and Christmas cookies while he sang Hanukkah songs.
