The machine will be able to analyze connections inside the brain and help design batteries that charge faster and last longer. Called Aurora, the supercomputer’s high-performance capabilities will be matched with the latest advances in artificial intelligence. Together they will be used by scientists researching cancer, nuclear fusion, vaccines, climate change, encryption, cosmology and other complex sciences and technologies.

When a cyst on Aaron Bady’s dog, Pequod, started bleeding a few months ago, the Oakland, Calif., magazine editor says he called seven or eight animal hospitals and couldn’t get an appointment anytime soon. He ended up landing a spot with his old vet in Sacramento and driving the 9-year-old bichon frisé an hour-and-a-half for an exam. “Getting him seen was a nightmare,” said Mr. Bady, 43 years old. Pequod still had to wait another three weeks for an operation, with the wound oozing gunk the whole time, Mr. Bady said.
