Israel has argued that Gaza’s biggest hospital, al-Shifa, conceals underground command centers for Hamas – a claim the group denies – stoking concerns the facility could be targeted. There is no simple solution to America’s unique problem of relentless gun violence. Each captures the twin realities of the subjects in the way only a double exposure photograph could, creating dueling focal points to which the eye cycles back and forthIt’s a surreal view of a nation unable to move on from its own cycle of gun violence. Experts have partly attributed the slump to misinformation, along with a lacklustre "Yes" campaign and conservative opposition. That's something I have been wondering about," he said, referring to laws allowing Indigenous Australians to claim rights to land based on traditional occupation. Reaching out to Aboriginal Australia can be challenging, as communities are scattered over vast distances and speak more than 150 languages. Votes from the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory count toward only the former. Visiting Alice Springs last month, Reuters saw "Yes" campaign posters on walls in the town centre and in government office complexes.

Liberty fans have waited 27 seasons for a W.N.B.A. The atmosphere at Barclays Center was electric for New York’s opening postseason game against the Washington Mystics. Those fans were rewarded with a Liberty win, 90-75, behind 29 points from Sabrina Ionescu and 20 from Jonquel Jones. The game started as a tense back-and-forth affair, but the Liberty took a narrow lead into halftime, and they never relinquished it. After the Liberty wrapped up the regular season with a 32-8 record, expectations were high that they could take the championship.

To the visitor driving in from out of state, the 127 Yard Sale seems like a kind of Ironman for thrifters. The “world’s longest yard sale” is a test of endurance and attention. Spanning six states, 690 miles and thousands of stalls, it traverses dramatic landscapes, delicate cultural terrain and two time zones. The 127 Yard Sale is fluid, kinetic, alive. Driving down 127, I started to see “yard sale” signs long before reaching its northernmost point in Addison, Mich. We asked some guys at a gas station where they thought it started.

Raul Gutiérrez Alvarado (left) and his nephew, William Domínguez Gutierrez, pose for a portrait outside of their Oak Cliff home. At the time, the local media narrative was one of positive change for the neighborhood, Valderas says. About a half-hour before a mid-August Brooklyn Cyclones game, a family of three, a reporter and a middle-aged man dressed in a Jedi robe walked into an elevator at Maimonides Park. As the door closed and they began their ascent, the Jedi turned to the others and asked, “So, what planet are you all from?”“Um, Brooklyn,” responded the matriarch of the family. The Jedi proceeded to hum “Mad About Me,” by the Mos Eisley Cantina house band, Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes, as if to tell them he was from the planet Tatooine. Out beyond the right-field wall, in the area known as the Backyard, a few hundred others were pounding brews and playing cornhole, blissfully unaware that a baseball game — the event that their ticket said they had paid to see — was about to begin. The two main draws on this particular Saturday were Star Wars Night and the $50 all-you-can-drink deal.

How soon is too soon to call a progressive and libertarian policy obsession a public policy fiasco? In the case of Oregon’s Drug Addiction Treatment and Recovery Act, better known as Measure 110, the moment can’t come soon enough. The Drug Policy Alliance, which spent millions to help pass the measure, called it “the biggest blow to the drug war to date” and celebrated its supposed success in a slick video. “Often, she says, someone is passed out in front of the lobby’s door, blocking her entrance. The other day, a man lurched in, lay down on a Forte couch, stripped off his shirt and shoes and refused to leave.”

MAYA BAY, Thailand, March 27 (Reuters) - On any given day in Thailand's Maya Bay, up to 40 blacktip reef sharks cruise in the cyan shallows while about 4,000 tourists visit its white-sand beach flanked by towering cliffs. Marine researcher Metavee Chuangcharoendee said that thanks to the pause in tourism the island was once again functioning as a nursery for young sharks. A number of factors affect the sharks around Phi Phi Leh Island, including seasonal movement patterns and human activity like fishing, Metavee said. For Phi Phi Island National Park, annual revenue was almost halved from 638.3 million baht ($18.7 million) in 2018 to 373.6 million baht in 2019 after authorities closed the beach. "If you can create a new image of Maya Bay as a nature reserve ...
The area, part of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, is a hotbed for fighters of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella organisation of Sunni Islamist groups. A TTP spokesman, Muhammad Khurasani, told Reuters its main target was Pakistan's military, but the police were standing in the way. "Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa pays a greater price for that" because of its exposure to the Islamist militants, he said. The TTP ended the ceasefire in November 2022, and regrouped militants restarted attacks in Pakistan soon after. Indeed he has no use for electricity and for more than half a century has lived entirely off the grid. That makes him one of the few people in Europe unconcerned about rising energy costs this winter. Right now, he has two house mates, a rooster, three chickens and a cat in a community he calls "The Tribe of the Harmonious Walnuts". "I feel privileged to have the freedom to choose my freedom," said Agnese, 35, who moved in two years ago. The "harmonious walnuts" grow fruit and vegetables, olives to produce olive oil, and keep bees for honey.
A woman stands in a queue to pay her respects to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, following her death, in London, Britain, September 15, 2022. They had come together to mark a moment in history - the passing of Britain's longest reigning monarch. "Sierra Leone, where I come from, was a colony under the British Empire so she means a lot to us." "Part of being British I guess is just having a queen or having Queen Elizabeth II on the throne."
