While President Biden tries to assuage voter concerns about his age in a presidential race that includes the two oldest men ever to seek the White House, a couple of miles away in the U.S. Senate, the gerontocracy remains alive and well — and little commented upon. The recent news that two octogenarians — Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont, 82, and Angus King of Maine, 80 — are each running for another six-year term generated little in the way of criticism or worry over age of the kind that Mr. Biden has faced. Their races, which both men are likely to win, are a reminder of how the Senate’s roster is chock-full of lawmakers staying in office at an age when most people are well into retirement. At the start of this Congress last year, the average age of elected officials was 64 in the Senate and 57.9 in the House. “They’re not in short supply around here,” Senator Peter Welch of Vermont, 77, said of octogenarians.

CNN —A group of 19 predominantly Democratic lawmakers is calling on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to provide answers about why he bypassed Congress last month to approve arms sales to Israel. The top US diplomat made two emergency determinations in December to immediately approve the transfer hundreds of millions of dollars in military equipment to Israel. In their letter, the lawmakers noted the rarity of administrations using emergency declarations to immediately approve arms sales without congressional approval. “Use of a national emergency waiver does not exempt the U.S. government from assessing whether arms sales are consistent with” those standards, they wrote. I would say that the process that the secretary followed and the process that we follow here at the State Department is the process that the law actually prescribed,” Miller said at a State Department briefing.

Bob Menendez, his fellow lawmaker from New Jersey, to resign because of his indictment last week on federal bribery charges. "I believe stepping down is best for those Senator Menendez has spent his life serving," Booker said in a statement on his X account. Booker called the allegations of corruption against Menendez "shocking" and "disturbing." Before Monday, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Senate Democrat to call on Menendez to resign. At least five House Democratic members from New Jersey have called on Menendez to resign.

Menendez, also a Democrat, said on Monday that he would stay in the Senate and fight the charges. Democratic Senators John Fetterman, Sherrod Brown and Peter Welch have also called for Menendez to resign, as well as several Democratic elected officials in Menendez's state of New Jersey, including Governor Phil Murphy. Menendez's legal troubles could complicate his party's efforts to maintain control of the Senate, though New Jersey has not elected a Republican to the seat since 1972. Following the announcement of the charges on Friday, Democratic U.S. Representative Andy Kim said on Saturday he would challenge Menendez for his seat.

A pair of Democrats introduced a bill to eliminate interest on existing federal student loan balances. "Thanks to this fix, 43 million Americans with existing federally held student loans would see their interest rates immediately eliminated," the press release said. The federal government should not exacerbate the problem by making money off borrowers' federal student loans," Courtney said in a statement. This legislation comes as interest on student-loan payments is beginning to accrue again in September, with borrowers resuming payments one month later. People should not be incurring interest during this 12-month on-ramp period, so I highly urge the administration to consider suspending those interest payments."

CNN —Three US senators are pressing Facebook-parent Meta, Google-parent Alphabet and Twitter about whether their layoffs may have hindered the companies’ ability to fight the spread of misinformation ahead of the 2024 elections. “This is particularly troubling given the emerging use of artificial intelligence to mislead voters,” wrote Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Vermont Democratic Sen. Peter Welch and Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, according to a copy of the letter reviewed by CNN. Since purchasing Twitter in October, Elon Musk has slashed headcount by more than 80%, in some cases eliminating entire teams. Meta has previously said it would eliminate about 21,000 jobs over two rounds of layoffs, hitting across teams devoted to policy, user experience and well-being, among others. One member of the committee, California Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla, voted against the bill Thursday and vowed to block any future floor vote on the legislation until lawmakers make several changes.
