Pepsi now expects organic revenue growth of approximately 4%, a more cautious outlook than its previous forecast of at least 4%. The company reiterated its guidance for core constant currency earnings growth of at least 8%. Frito-Lay North America's volume declined 4%, while Pepsi's North American beverage unit saw volume shrink 3%. Executives said volume for Pepsi's North American drinks has improved sequentially, signaling that its attempts to lure back shoppers have begun working.

Liquid Death has built a $1.4 billion brand by being as eye-catching as possible. The canned water brand on Tuesday announced a contest that will see it give away a $400,000 fighter jet to one of its fans. Between now and September 4, each in-store purchase of a Liquid Death product will count as an entry into the sweepstakes. In the event that the winner doesn't want the jet, Liquid Death is offering an alternative cash prize of $250,000 delivered in a briefcase. PepsiCo on Tuesday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that beat analysts' expectations, despite a recall of some Quaker Foods cereal and bars that dented U.S. volume. The company's organic revenue, which excludes acquisitions, divestitures and foreign exchange, increased 2.7% in the quarter. The company's food division saw its volume decrease 0.5%, while its beverage segment reported flat volume. The Quaker Foods recall dented Pepsi's organic volume by roughly 1%. As Gatorade approaches its 60th birthday, the brand is staying spry, branching out into new categories from unflavored water to energy drink mixes. It accounted for 63.5% of the U.S. sports drink market in 2023, according to Euromonitor International data. Gatorade President Mike Del Pozzo told CNBC that the competition is good for the category overall – and shows his brand's own strength. But the retail giant backpedaled this week, saying higher prices on many grocery items and household staples like paper goods have stuck. Food prices climbed 2.6%, fueled by a 5.1% jump in prices for food away from home, a category that includes restaurant meals and vending machine purchases. That gives their makers the ability to keep raising prices to mitigate higher costs, even as their volume drops. Even some of the biggest U.S. brands have signaled that consumers' tolerance of higher prices has worn thin.

Many of the reasons to be bullish on PepsiCo are already priced into the stock, Morgan Stanley warned. After the strong earnings report, Mohsenian said further upside to the company's topline compared with consensus estimates is now more limited in the second half of the year. Prebiotic soda maker Olipop is set to cross $200 million in annual sales this year, just five years after it arrived on grocery store shelves. Olipop had raised $55.4 million as of Jan. 2, at a reported valuation of $199.8 million, according to Pitchbook data. Consumers are also increasingly interested in "gut health," one of the latest wellness trends. Both Olipop and Poppi have leaned into influencer marketing on TikTok, where gut health became a trending topic last year. But Olipop's Goodwin is confident that consumers are willing to pay more for the drinks he formulates.
But more chip bags and snack containers being sold also means more waste from plastic and other packaging materials, something PepsiCo is aiming to take on. "Two years ago, if you think about our multipack packages, there was one plastic [packaging] outside, and each multipack serving," he said. McDonald's recently agreed under pressure from activist shareholders to produce a report on reusable packaging in exchange for having a shareholder vote on the issue rescinded. As far back as 2019, both Coke and Pepsi had already cut ties with a plastics industry association, and issued previous goals related to recyclable, compostable and reusable packaging. Taking what it learned from creating the Off The Eaten Path's packaging, Frito-Lay has introduced other packaging made from 85% renewable plant materials that produce roughly 60% lower greenhouse gas emissions than traditional snack bags.
