SHANGHAI/SINGAPORE, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Fidelity International has garnered 5 billion yuan ($700 million) from investors for its first fixed income mutual fund in China, deepening the asset manager's involvement in the $3.8 trillion mutual fund market. The bond fund - Fidelity's second mutual fund product in China - raised the sum mainly from institutional investors in a three-week, shortened subscription period, the money manager said. China's mutual fund industry is crowded with over 150 players, including foreign ones such as BlackRock (BLK.N), Schroders (SDR.L) and JPMorgan Asset Management. "The fundraising size is rather encouraging," due to tough competition in the local market and Fidelity's limited track record in China, said Huang, who heads Fidelity International's two-year-old China mutual fund unit. Fidelity International was formerly the international investment arm of Boston-based Fidelity Investments before being spun off.

Local municipal general obligation bonds help fund operations or specific projects. Right now, yields for local general obligation munis are historically attractive at about 3.7%, said Cooper Howard, fixed income strategist for the Schwab Center for Financial Research. In general, the credit quality of local general obligation munis are pretty solid, said Richard Schwam, a municipal credit research analyst at AllianceBernstein. "There are so many general obligation bonds in the country that you can stay away from anything too tiny. Weinberg also recommended diversifying with multiple states, but cautioned that buying a bond outside of your state means you'll likely be subject to state income tax.

[1/2] A sign indicates the direction to the offices of Progress Software in Burlington, Massachusetts, U.S., July 26, 2023. But more than two months after the breach was first disclosed by Massachusetts-based Progress Software, the parade of victims has scarcely slowed. The tallies show that nearly 40 million people have been affected so far by the hack of Progress' MOVEit Transfer file management program. Now the digital extortionists involved, a group named "cl0p", have become increasingly aggressive about thrusting their data into the public domain. MOVEit is used by organizations to ship large amounts of often sensitive data: pension information, social security numbers, medical records, billing data and the like.

Meanwhile, preferred securities can see yields around 7%. The Fed's rate hikes also sweetened yields on money market funds and certificates of deposit . Yet what is the best avenue for someone who is looking to generate the most income on a $10,000 investment — without taking on a lot of risk? The ICE BofA Fixed Rate Preferred Securities index, which tracks the performance of fixed-rate preferred securities, has a yield to maturity of 7.1%. "Right now you can't do better … than just owning short- to intermediate term high-grade fixed income," he said.

Richard Baker / Contributor / Getty ImagesLONDON — Workers in the U.K face a "risky" future when it comes to their pensions, according to a report released by think tank the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Almost 90% of Brits aren't putting an appropriate amount of money into their pension pots — generally considered to be around 15% of earnings, according to the IFS report. Including self-employed savers within that framework would also boost their pension pots and reduce their dependence on the state pension later in life, Savova added. Most people in the U.K. are automatically entitled to a state pension, which is currently £203.85 ($253) per week. "Increasing the State Pension Age will only escalate pensioner poverty which falls disproportionately on those who have lower incomes and retire early due to ill-health," Peaple told CNBC via email.
Investors searching for income were buoyed by the move higher in the 10-year Treasury yield, but there are also some other opportunities to bring in some cash. "They can blend A with AA and AAA and you can get better yields," Weinberg explained. In fact, a good signal to buy munis is when their yields are at least 85% of corresponding Treasury yields, he said. Investors can also buy municipal bond funds to get exposure to the market. Investors can also get exposure through a diversified exchange traded fund, such as the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF .
"Uncertainty around how high interest rates will go has driven redemptions in muni bond funds," he explained. Whenever we have a chance to add to muni bonds now, we do so." For instance, you can go to Fidelity Investments' website and access more than 50,000 municipal bonds as new issues or through dealers on the secondary market. Here are five Morningstar five-star rated muni bond funds. "Many closed-end bond funds are trading at prices that are below their net asset value," he said.
