The coronation of King Charles III was billed as a chance to usher in a new kind of monarchy — slimmer, more accessible and more inclusive — for the 21st century. Though Saturday’s ceremony had its share of modern flourishes, it was hard to escape the sense that they were mostly tweaks to an ancient ritual which, like the monarchy itself, can’t escape the heavy burdens of the past. As it happened, the coronation was a huge success by most measures. King Charles looked burdened, and then relieved, by the responsibility of it all; Queen Camilla looked radiant. “The Penny is mightier than the sword,” Chris Bryant, a Labour member of Parliament, tweeted.)

Britain's new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak walks past Larry the cat outside Downing Street, in London, Britain, October 25, 2022. "The fact that we have Rishi Sunak as prime minister is definitely calming on markets. We believe that it is under owned, it's unloved, undervalued, and there is some upside from here." Sunak in his inaugural speech outside Downing Street on Tuesday stressed the importance of "economic stability and confidence" while warning of "difficult decisions to come." Central to the potential stability narrative, as far as U.K. markets are concerned, is the assumption that the central bank will now be less aggressive in raising interest rates.

We now have our third Tory prime minister in seven weeks — Rishi Sunak, a former finance minister. But perhaps one of the most head-scratching moments of this whole ordeal was how Boris Johnson’s supporters were pushing for him to make a comeback following Liz Truss’ disastrous 44 days as prime minister. He won by default without the vote being decided online by all Conservative Party members, as planned. Of course, limiting the decision of a new prime minister to the members of one party alone is undemocratic. That just scratches the surface of the damage he did as prime minister.
Social media users have misinterpreted a graphic posted on Penny Mordaunt’s social media accounts about the Conservative MP being “most trusted (to provide) a fresh start” for her party when compared to Rishi Sunak. A graph shared by Mordaunt states that 57% of people trust her to provide the Tories with a fresh start, whereas 44% trust Rishi Sunak with the same (here and here). One was: “Do you think Rishi Sunak would represent a fresh start?”, to which 44% replied “yes”, 45% said “no”, and 11% responded “don’t know”. The other was: “Do you think Penny Mordaunt would represent a fresh start?”, to which 57% replied “yes”, 28% said “no”, and 15% responded “don’t know”. The graphic posted on Penny Mordaunt’s social media accounts is based on two different questions.
LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Investors welcomed Rishi Sunak as Britain's new prime minister on Monday, but they're likely to give him little leeway to diverge from spending restraint and tax rises after his predecessor shook their faith in the Conservative party's management of the economy. Yet Donovan said the mayhem of the last month means Sunak will have next to no room to make bold choices, lest he risk the market's wrath. And I don't think that the incoming prime minister has that." "The settling down of the situation in the UK means what is happening in politics is now more of an idiosyncratic thing just affecting UK markets, and in the UK too what global markets are doing will become more and more important."
LONDON—Former U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak , extended his lead over another party rival in the race to become Britain’s next prime minister Monday as he gained more endorsements from allies of former prime minister Boris Johnson. Sunak will become prime minister once he is officially appointed by King Charles III and will be the first prime minister appointed by the new King following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September. Now that Sunak has seen off an attempted return by wayward former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, yields are down to 3.7%. About 30 billion pounds of her 45 billion pounds of unfunded tax cuts have been already reversed, leaving a narrower 40 billion pound hole. But cheaper borrowing costs hastened by Sunak’s appointment should cut the gap to just 30 billion pounds, a UK budget expert told Breakingviews. Hollie Adams | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON — Rishi Sunak will be named the U.K.'s new prime minister, following a fast-tracked Conservative Party leadership race initiated to fill the void left by Liz Truss' resignation. The 42-year-old takes over just seven weeks after placing second to Truss, who stepped down Thursday, bringing to a swift close her 44 days in office — the shortest tenure of any U.K. prime minister. Sunak, who is credited with steering the U.K. economy through the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, is broadly seen as a safe pair of fiscal hands. Indeed, after being berated by Truss during the race as a voice of Treasury orthodoxy, his critique of the PM's "unfunded tax cuts" appears to have been vindicated.

LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - British government bond prices rose sharply on Monday as former finance minister Rishi Sunak cruised to victory in the race to succeed Liz Truss as prime minister, removing at least one source of uncertainty for bond investors. Sunak's rivals, former prime minister Boris Johnson and cabinet minister Penny Mordaunt, dropped out of the Conservative Party leadership race on Sunday and Monday. Gilt jumped briefly on the news that Sunak, a former finance minister, had won the contest. "The fall in gilt yields on the news today that Rishi Sunak will become the UK's next Prime Minister has reduced the chances of a significant fiscal consolidation," said Ruth Gregory, economist at consultancy Capital Economics. The spread between 10-year German and British government bond yields narrowed sharply to 146 bps, after rising above 165 bps on Friday.
Like Truss, Sunak promised a tough approach to illegal immigration and vowed to expand the government’s controversial Rwanda immigration policy. Sunak left Goldman Sachs to get an MBA at Stanford University. After finishing his studies, Sunak worked at the hedge fund TCI, before setting his own up – Theleme Partners – with a colleague. The party held its second leadership race in the space of just a few months, and Sunak became the UK's presumptive prime minister on Monday after his only remaining rival, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew.
Sunak, the 42-year-old former finance minister, could be named leader as soon as Monday to replace Liz Truss, becoming Britain's third prime minister in less than two months. "The United Kingdom is a great country but we face a profound economic crisis," Sunak said in a statement declaring his candidacy on Sunday. Should she fail to hit the threshold, Sunak would become prime minister. "He's not taking anything for granted at all," interior minister Grant Shapps, a supporter of Sunak, told BBC television. If chosen, the former Goldman Sachs analyst would be the United Kingdom's first prime minister of Indian origin.
Rishi Sunak could be elected leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister of the U.K. if he receives enough votes from fellow lawmakers Monday. LONDON — Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak looks set to become the next prime minister of the U.K., with votes to be counted Monday afternoon. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson was Sunak's biggest competition, but he dropped out of the race late Sunday. It remains unclear how many Conservative lawmakers who backed Johnson will now move to support Sunak or Mordaunt.
