A woman has been arrested and charged with a hate crime in connection with splattering red paint on the home of the Jewish director of the Brooklyn Museum earlier this summer. Taylor Pelton, 28, was charged Wednesday with criminal mischief as a hate crime in connection with the June attack, the New York City Police Department said. In the attack, red paint was splattered on the front facade and door of Brooklyn Museum director Anne Pasternak’s Brooklyn home. The Brooklyn Museum told NBC News Friday: "We are aware the District Attorney has filed criminal charges against an individual accused of participating in the June 12 vandalism at the homes of several Brooklyn Museum leaders. "Our vision remains rooted in the belief that art fosters dialogue and mutual understanding among people with diverse experiences and perspectives."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The number of western monarch butterflies overwintering in California dropped by 30% last year, likely due to how wet it was, researchers said Tuesday. Volunteers who visited sites in California and Arizona around Thanksgiving tallied more than 230,000 butterflies, compared to 330,000 in 2022, according to the Xerces Society, an environmental nonprofit that focuses on the conservation of invertebrates. Scientists say the butterflies are at critically low levels in western states because of destruction to their milkweed habitat along their migratory route due to housing construction and the increased use of pesticides and herbicides. On the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains, another monarch population travels from southern Canada and the northeastern United States to central Mexico. Scientists estimate that the monarch population in the eastern U.S. has fallen by about 80% since the mid-1990s, but the drop-off in the western U.S. has been even steeper.

In 1932, the painter Agnes Pelton traded a well-established career in New York for the beauty and isolation of Cathedral City, a desert settlement near Palm Springs, Calif. A few years later, her ethereal abstractions caught the attention of a small group of artists in New Mexico who called themselves the Transcendental Painting Group (TPG). Pelton never met most of the artists and didn’t attend their gatherings, but they saw in her work what they hoped to achieve in their own, and they elected her their honorary president. “Another World: The Transcendental Painting Group, 1938-1945,” opening Dec. 18 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), brings to light this little-known band of philosophically minded artists. The exhibition presents some 80 works by 11 artists who were united in the belief that “the spiritual can be both achieved and expressed through abstraction,” said LACMA curator Leah Lehmbeck.

Sasse, a Republican, was recommended for the top post by a unanimous vote of the trustees. A final vote to elevate Sasse as the school’s 13th president is set for Nov. 10 by the state university system Board of Governors. “I would have no activity in partisan politics in any way as I arrive at the University of Florida,” Sasse said, adding that his candidacy was not pushed by GOP Gov. And despite his strong criticism of the communist Chinese government, Sasse said students and faculty from China should feel welcome.
