Neymar ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee on international duty. He underwent surgery earlier this month in a Belo Horizonte hospital. The 31-year-old is responding "very well" but the recovery will be long and he must focus on the process, Lasmar told a press conference at Brazil's training center in Teresopolis. Governor Eduardo Leite declared a state of public calamity and canceled statewide parades meant to celebrate Brazil's Independence Day on Thursday. In addition to the 39 fatalities in Rio Grande do Sul, one person died in neighboring Santa Catarina state while driving through the city of Jupia when a tree fell on their car. Independent weather forecasters MetSul and Climatempo cautioned Rio Grande do Sul is expected to receive more heavy showers on Thursday and Friday.

SAO PAULO, April 6 (Reuters) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday again criticized the country's interest rates, saying at a meeting with journalists that current lending costs were inexplicable and hinting at a potential change to inflation targets. "If the inflation target is wrong, change the target," Lula said, according to remarks broadcast by TV channel GloboNews. Brazil has an inflation target of 3.25% for this year, which will be lowered to 3% in 2024, but consumer prices reached 5.6% in the 12 months through February. Benchmark interest rates stand at a six-year high of 13.75%. RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Brazilian soccer legend Pele was diagnosed with a respiratory infection but remains in a stable condition, a medical report showed on Friday. "The medical team diagnosed a respiratory infection, which is being treated with antibiotics. The response has been adequate, and the patient, who remains in a common room, is stable, with general improvement in health status," said the report from hospital Albert Einstein. The 82-year old will remain hospitalized for the next few days to continue treatment, his medical staff added. On Thursday, the former forward posted a photo on Instagram thanking his supporters for the positive messages he has received.
