Found Golf Balls CEO Shaun Shienfield, whose company recovers and resells millions of lost balls across the US and Canada each year, told CNN that he gauged the average to be between three and four each round. Using Shienfield’s low estimate, that’s over 1.5 billion balls lost in the US every year since 2020. “While precise global estimates are challenging … the worldwide figure could easily exceed 3 to 5 billion golf balls lost each year,” Petersen told CNN. Mitchell Schols, founder of Canada-based Biodegradable Golf Balls, put a “very conservative” estimate for North America at one million balls lost to oceans annually. One UK-based man told CNN in 2015 that he could earn up to £100,000 (about $114,000) annually by diving to retrieve golf balls from lakes on golf courses.

The world’s most remarkable tennis courts

But to American photographer and journalist Nick Pachelli, a tennis court is the harmonious union of surface, sound, and spectators, complemented by the natural elements and the inherent intensity of tennis. “Tennis is our only sport where the canvas on which we play can change so dramatically,” Pachelli, a former top junior tennis player himself, told CNN, highlighting each court’s “unique persona,” as he describes in his new photobook, The Tennis Court. During more than 500 days of travel, Pachelli visited over a thousand courts (of the roughly 200 in the book), crisscrossing more than 250 cities and towns in his pursuit of spotlighting the world’s most aesthetic, esteemed, and even idiosyncratic tennis courts. Reached by a few hundred steps, the tennis court at Hotel Il San Pietro Di Positano in Italy is between the cliff face and the pebble beach. The Courts at Borrego Springs in California describe themselves as 'four tennis courts, a clubhouse and a pool in the middle of nowhere."

On an Island in Maine, a Meal Worth Traveling For
  + stars: | 2024-07-13 | by ( Kate Guadagnino | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Brooke Williams and Josh Liberson have hosted more dinner parties than they can count at their two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. Entertaining at their home on an island in Midcoast Maine, however, is a different thing, largely because it takes at least two boats and, often, an ATV to get from the mainland to the property, which sits on a bluff surrounded by sea and woods. Williams has been going to the island since 1987, when her parents and a friend of theirs purchased 15 rugged acres spanning one of its hook-shaped peninsulas, along with the ’70s-era board-and-batten cabin that sat on top of it. (They later added a bathroom with running water and built a second rectangular structure onto the original.) Every year since, the couple — and, starting in 2007, their daughter, Ada, 16 — have spent part of their summer on the island, walking, reading, swimming and, in the evenings, building a bonfire on the pebble beach in front of their house for making s’mores.

The outlet reported that SpaceX's operations have caused explosions, fires, leaks, and other issues at least 19 times since 2019. The species is listed as "threatened" by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The company's environmental practices have caused friction with government agencies like the National Park Service and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The outlet reported that SpaceX hired a consultant to track bird patterns, and its researchers "found little to no evidence" of changes to the local bird population. A former National Park Service official, Mark Spier, said SpaceX "misled" officials.

CNN —The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday it had created a special exemption for Tiger Woods alone, allowing for qualification to certain events on its schedule. The 15-time major champion is tied for the most ever PGA Tour victories with Sam Snead. The eight ‘Signature Events’ on the PGA Tour are the marquee tournaments on the tour’s schedule, boasting increased prize money and more FedExCup points up for grabs. The 48-year-old has played in only four tournaments this year: The Genesis Invitational and the three majors. The other change which the PGA Tour announced on Tuesday was that all ‘Signature Events’ would have a minimum field of 72 players.

Bryson DeChambeau’s brilliant bunker shot at 18 and winning putt that followed capped off a remarkable week at Pinehurst No. His second U.S. Open win comes at age 30, another rare accomplishment. Bryson must get up and down from the bunker to win the U.S. Open. This is arguably the most painful in the disappointing decade-long run of major championship Sundays for Rory McIlroy. As gold surged this year to its highest price ever, Xena Lin joined the frenzy by making monthly purchases of gold “beans,” pebble-like morsels of the precious metal. For Ms. Lin, a 25-year-old administrative worker in southern China, the $80 beans — small enough to rest on a fingertip and weighing about one-thirtieth of an ounce — were an affordable way to buy into the gold excitement without splurging for jewelry, gold bars or coins. She had dabbled with investing in stocks in the past, but she said buying gold, especially in this fun way, inspired her to continue investing. “I’m still working hard to save more,” Ms. Lin said. But gold’s climb to highs above $2,400 per ounce has proved more resilient, and lasted longer, because of China.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler surged into contention to win a third straight Phoenix Open on Sunday, overcoming a huge mistake on the 18th hole to shoot a 5-under 66 in the weather-delayed third round. Scheffler was at 13 under, two shots behind Sahith Theegala and Nick Taylor as players struggle to avoid a Monday finish amid a second straight week of weather issues on the PGA Tour. Theegala matched Taylor's two-putt birdie on the short par-4 17th to tie for the lead and shot 69. Charley Hoffman had four straight birdies to close out a 64 and was tied with Andrew Novak at 14 under. A long weather delay pushed the first round into Friday, and the tournament has tried to play catchup ever since.
