CNN —A district court judge in San Antonio ruled against the Texas attorney general’s attempt to stop one of the state’s biggest counties from mailing voter registration applications to a large number of unregistered voters. Judge Antonia Arteaga on Monday dismissed a temporary restraining order and a temporary injunction filed by Attorney General Ken Paxton as moot, since Bexar County had already mailed out the applications. County commissioners approved a plan on September 3 to mail roughly 210,000 applications through a contract with an outside vendor. The attorney general argued in his challenge that it was illegal for the county to arrange for the unsolicited, mass mailing of voter registration applications. His office also launched an election integrity unit in 2018 investigating allegations of voter fraud, but it has yielded few convictions.

What important lesson can we learn from history to help us in this moment? Seeing that in our past should help us expect that and hopefully brace ourselves against it in our own time. You take things case by case, situation by situation, lie by lie. Do you think the news media — as a whole — is adequately covering Trump? I think Americans broadly know that’s happening, but also that they may not necessarily know what to do about it.

CNN —A Texas appeals court upheld two injunctions in a pair of legal cases Friday, in an order blocking the state’s Department of Family and Protective Services from investigating families of transgender youth who are seeking gender-affirming medical care for their children. The court of appeals upheld a trial court decision in the Friday order, ruling in favor of LGBTQ+ advocates and families in two related Texas lawsuits asking a state court to block the agency from investigating parents who provide their children with gender-affirming care. Paxton appealed the district court injunction in March and declared investigations could continue during the appeal process under the law. The court, in its opinion, also affirmed Paxton’s opinion does not alter preexisting law or legal obligations of the department. Abbott’s directive to the agency was seen by many as an attack on transgender children and their families.

Special prosecutor Brian Wice confirmed the case was settled in a phone call with CNN on Tuesday. A grand jury indicted Paxton on two counts of securities fraud and one count of failing to register with state securities regulators in July 2015, months after he was sworn in as attorney general. Wice told reporters after the hearing that the terms of the settlement amounted to a just conclusion to the case. He was impeached and suspended from office on allegations of corruption last May in the Republican-controlled Texas House, though a September trial in the Texas Senate acquitted him. Paxton was one of the highest-profile and last-remaining defenders of Trump’s baseless claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.

CNN —Angela Chao, CEO of shipping company Foremost Group and sister of former US cabinet secretary Elaine Chao, died after her car became submerged in a pond on a Central Texas ranch last month, according to the Wall Street Journal and a report from Blanco County Emergency Services obtained by the Austin American-Statesman. Chao’s Tesla Model X SUV went over an embankment and into a pond when she put the car in reverse instead of drive during a three-point turn shortly before midnight on February 10, the Wall Street Journal reports. According to the Wall Street Journal, a longer cable was eventually garnered, and the car was pulled from the pond. First responders soon retrieved Chao from her vehicle and began resuscitation efforts but were unsuccessful, according to the Wall Street Journal. Neither the Blanco County Emergency Services, Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, nor Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office have responded to CNN’s request for comment and additional information.

A judge on Friday temporarily blocked the Texas attorney general from forcing an L.G.B.T.Q. organization to turn over documents on transgender minors and the gender-affirming care they may be receiving. In Texas, medical care for gender transition is prohibited for minors under a law passed last year. The judge added that such an ask would infringe on the group’s constitutional rights and that its members would be subject to “gross invasions” of privacy. In a statement, PFLAG’s lawyers, including the American Civil Liberties Union, said they were “grateful that the court saw the harm the attorney general’s office’s intrusive demands posed.”

Paxton did not testify at his impeachment trial. The letter, directed to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, states that Texas’ actions “have impeded operations” and are unconstitutional. A combination of Texas National Guard soldiers, equipment and physical barriers has restricted Border Patrol from approximately 2.5 miles of the US-Mexico border, according to the letter. The Shelby Park area is located near Eagle Pass, Texas, which has seen a high number of border crossings. Abbott’s actions, which have included placing concertina wire along the state’s shared border with Mexico and deploying National Guard troops, have also strained a historically close relationship on the ground with Border Patrol. “This is just mind-blowing,” a former Homeland Security official told CNN, referring to Texas blocking Border Patrol agents.

DALLAS (AP) — A Texas businessman at the center of the scandal that led to the historic impeachment of state Attorney General Ken Paxton has been charged with additional federal crimes. Paul, 36, pleaded not guilty in June to the eight counts of making false statements while seeking loans from mortgage lenders in the U.S. and Ireland. Paxton was suspended from office ahead of his impeachment trial, where he pleaded not guilty to political charges including misconduct, bribery and corruption. Neither Paxton nor Paul was called to testify at the impeachment proceeding. The federal investigation of Paxton is ongoing and he still faces a state criminal trial on securities fraud charges brought against him in 2015.

Washington CNN —Yelp is suing Texas to ensure it can continue to tell users that crisis pregnancy centers listed on its site do not provide abortions or abortion referrals, opening a new front in the fight between states and the tech industry over abortion restrictions. Yelp said it currently applies the following label to crisis pregnancy center listings: “This is a Crisis Pregnancy Center. Crisis Pregnancy Centers do not offer abortions or referrals to abortion providers.”Yelp’s complaint said its labels are based on a manual evaluation of “thousands of business pages” on its site and reflect truthful statements. But Paxton’s impending lawsuit threatens to silence Yelp and infringe on the company’s First Amendment rights, the complaint alleges. Yelp argues that its labels for crisis pregnancy centers are not deceptive and that Paxton himself had publicly commended the disclosures as “accurate” in a February press release.

His lawyer, Dan Cogdell, predicted that the securities case would be quickly dealt with. He was less willing to make a prediction about the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department’s public integrity section. Mr. Paxton has faced a cloud of legal troubles since he was sworn in as attorney general in 2015, replacing Greg Abbott, who is now governor. He has been twice re-elected, in part by aligning himself with the right-leaning politics championed by former President Donald J. Trump. Voters delivered comfortable victories to Mr. Paxton even after his indictment and after several of his top aides came forward with claims that he had abused his office by helping a wealthy donor, the subject of the recent attempt to oust him from office.

The impeachment trial of Ken Paxton that ended in his acquittal on Saturday was about more than the fate of the Texas attorney general. It was also the most dramatic flashpoint in a yearslong struggle among Republican leaders in the Legislature over control of the party and the future direction of the state. The trial occurred only because a majority of Republicans in the Texas House voted in May to impeach Mr. Paxton, sending charges of bribery and abuse of office to the State Senate. But after the voting was done on Saturday, and Republican state senators decided overwhelmingly against removing Mr. Paxton from office, the lieutenant governor lashed out at the Texas House, whose Republican members are more moderate. “An impeachment should never happen again in the House like it happened this year,” Mr. Patrick said.

The Texas Senate on Saturday ended deliberations over whether Attorney General Ken Paxton should be removed from office, putting the Republican's historic impeachment trial on the brink of a verdict. Paxton, who did not attend the majority of the two-week trial, was not seen in the chamber as some senators wandered around their desks. If convicted, Paxton would become Texas' first statewide official convicted on impeachment charges in more than 100 years. Leaning into divisions among Republicans, Buzbee portrayed the impeachment as a plot orchestrated by an old guard of GOP rivals. The verdict will be decided by 30 of the 31 state senators, most of them Republicans.

The case against Ken Paxton, a nationally prominent conservative politician, was overseen by a board of managers from the state’s House, led by Republicans, and it played out at times as a contest over how much Republican politics should matter in the proceedings. The House lawmakers approached the case like a criminal trial, appointing a prominent Houston lawyer, Rusty Hardin, who methodically elicited testimony over seven days from 15 witnesses who were mostly senior aides to Mr. Paxton. In a nod to the politics looming in the background, the prosecutors also frequently sought to highlight the staunchly conservative backgrounds of the witnesses against Mr. Paxton. Part of the reason for doing so is the nature of the jury pool: The voting senators included 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats. But it also reflected efforts by the conservative wing of the party to attack the impeachment as a political plot put forward by lobbyists, RINOs — Republicans in name only — and Democrats in Austin.

A verdict from the Texas Senate could arrive as soon as Friday. It is unclear how quickly the state Senate could reach a verdict, but Republican Lt. Gov. Paxton's impeachment trial has focused on the testimony of his former staff, including a group of senior deputies who reported the attorney general to the FBI in 2020, accusing him of breaking the law to help Paul. Deliberations began on Friday in the impeachment trial of Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general, as the jury of state senators weighed allegations of bribery and abuse of office based on complaints made against him by his most senior former aides. Before deliberating, the senators — 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats — heard closing arguments from the House impeachment managers, led by Republican lawmakers who oversaw the prosecution, and from Mr. Paxton’s lawyers. “The defense isn’t that he didn’t do it, it’s that it doesn’t matter because he won the election,” Representative Andrew Murr, a West Texas Republican who led the impeachment managers, said in his closing argument. “That is a godless, rudderless morality, and it cannot be the new normal in Texas.”Mr. Paxton sat listening at the defense table, the first time he has appeared in the Senate chamber for the trial since he entered a plea of not guilty on opening day. From the spectators’ gallery above Mr. Paxton, at least three of his former senior aides who testified at the trial sat together, looking down on the proceedings.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s impeachment trial on corruption allegations is among several such proceedings that have occurred in U.S. history. The Republican-led prosecution rested its case on Wednesday for impeaching the attorney general of Texas, Ken Paxton, ending on a central claim: that an Austin real estate investor paid for Mr. Paxton’s home renovations in exchange for favors. The testimony about countertops and cabinetry — and a bill for $121,000 — came on the seventh day of the trial. It had appeared, at the start, that the day would focus on another allegation: that Mr. Paul had helped Mr. Paxton conduct an extramarital affair. The prosecution called the woman, Laura Olson, a former staff member to a Republican state senator and a witness whose testimony had been highly anticipated. Mr. Paxton’s lawyers immediately objected, and Ms. Olson waited around in the Texas Capitol, mostly at a table in the legislative library.
