May marked the lowest annual rate since March 2021, which was the first time in this economic cycle that inflation topped the Federal Reserve's 2% target. An important economic measure for the Federal Reserve showed Friday that inflation during May slowed to its lowest annual rate in more than three years. Including food and energy, headline inflation was flat on the month and also up 2.6% on an annual basis. Outside of the inflation numbers, the Bureau of Economic Analysis report showed that personal income rose 0.5% on the month, stronger than the 0.4% estimate. Shelter-related costs have proven stickier than Fed officials have anticipated and have helped keep the central bank from reducing interest rates as expected this year.

If repeated in a second Trump term, many economists fear that kind of agenda could stoke inflation at a critical moment and add to America’s rapidly growing debt mountain. "A large asteroid impact is potentially the only natural disaster humanity has the technology to predict years in advance and take action to prevent," Lindley Johnson, a NASA planetary defense officer emeritus, said in a press release. That's because they didn't think Congress would approve funding for a critical space mission to study the asteroid "unless impact became certain," NASA's summary said. Options for preventing an asteroid impact include shooting the asteroid with lasers, launching a nuclear bomb at it, or simply smacking a space probe into it to nudge it away from Earth. Participants weren't sure Congress would fund the mission unless the asteroid was a certain threat — not a 72% chance of threat.

ET, the yield on the 10-year Treasury was up by over two basis points to 4.3411%. The 2-year Treasury yield was last at 4.7576% after rising by less than one basis point. U.S. Treasury yields were higher on Thursday as investors looked to economic data for hints about the outlook for the economy and monetary policy. Economic data slated for Thursday includes weekly initial jobless claims, May's durable goods orders and pending home sales figures, also for May. That comes after data released Wednesday showed that new home sales fell over 11% in May.

Rivian on Thursday reconfirmed its 2024 guidance that included production of 57,000 vehicles and a path to positive gross profit during the fourth quarter, including regulatory credits. It also outlined longer-term growths, such as plans to achieve positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in 2027. Volkswagen is expected to use Rivian's electrical architecture and software stack for vehicles beginning in the second half of the decade, Scaringe said Tuesday. "Two or three cuts is a forecast, it's not a promise, and we will adapt monetary policy according to incoming information," Thedéen told CNBC's Arabile Gumede. "Our inflation forecast is pointing to a good inflation outlook, we're still already now very close to our target and our forecast has pointed to 2% inflation in the coming months and years," Thedéen said. In order to deliver more rate cuts, "we don't need to have a super positive surprise, we need to have data coming in in-line overall. So I think that would be the main message," Thedéen told CNBC. Headline inflation in Sweden was 3.7% in May, slightly higher than the 3.5% forecast in a Reuters poll of economists.
