Not that long ago, Republican presidents were carrying out the Clean Air and Water Acts, creating the Environmental Protection Agency, expanding the National Park System and even initiating the country’s most authoritative report on climate change, the National Climate Assessment. Many of today’s Republican leaders stoke fear and anger by mocking the most divisive climate activists while claiming that every environmental solution is a radical one. If they’re not doing that, Republicans can often be found on the sidelines and disengaged from the issue completely. Instead of continuing the environmental legacy they were once known for, they have ceded the fight against climate change to Democrats, putting themselves on the wrong side of history. In other words, Donald Trump’s denial of climate change probably cost him the White House.

Many of the 63 national parks across the United States have seen an explosion of visitor numbers both during and after the pandemic, which often has led to booked campsites, clogged trails and timed entry requirements in an attempt to limit crowds. The big-name national parks however are just one category of public lands under the purview of the National Park Service. And the designation does not necessarily imply a superiority of scenery and activities — many of the lesser-known national historic sites, monuments, recreation areas and seashores also provide excellent spots to explore the varied natural beauty and attractions of the United States, but without the big ticket crowds. “Regardless of formal designation, each of the 424 sites in the National Park System offer visitors a variety of opportunities for inspiration, relaxation, recreation and education,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist with the N.P.S. House Republicans want to strip billions of dollars in funding for energy projects as part of their debt ceiling bill. These latest changes are part of a last-minute effort by Republican leadership to get their members on board with a debt ceiling vote. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy insisted on Wednesday morning that the House will vote on the debt ceiling limit on Wednesday, despite several GOP House members publicly voicing their opposition to the legislation. In exchange, it would increase the debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion, or through March 31, 2024, whichever comes first. Whenever Republicans manage to pass their debt ceiling legislation, it'll be just a first step in negotiations with the White House, which is demanding to raise the limit without conditions.
