Apple needs its big AI moment
  + stars: | 2024-05-24 | by ( Jordan Hart | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
That's made Apple's lack of a big generative AI announcement so far particularly noticeable. However, one big sign an announcement may be coming at WWDC was the unveiling of its M4 chip, which Apple described as an "outrageously powerful chip for AI." The CEO spoke of "big opportunities across our products" for generative AI and promised that Apple is "well positioned" to take on the space. "We think investors will take any generative AI announcement positively," Morningstar tech analyst William Kerwin said. We'd expect any new-gen AI announcement to see strong adoption when released."

India and Japan are two bright spots in Asia's "supremely interesting" markets, JPMorgan's Filippo Gori said at the bank's Global China Summit on Thursday, referring to the region's equity as well as deal-making landscape. India, which is very in high demand," Gori, co-head of global banking at JPMorgan, told CNBC. While mergers and acquisitions activity declined globally in 2023, Japan's deal value rose 23% from a year ago to about $123 billion, Bain & Company said in its Japan M&A report. "Japan's economy is uniquely well positioned for growth in M&A," the report said. Last year M&A deal value in India stood at $136 billion, a 27% drop for a year earlier, which was in line with the global decline in M&A activity, according to Deloitte's India M&A trends report.

“To still impart that knowledge on young people, and particularly young black women, that they can do this.”Becoming a pilot was something Claiborne, originally from Virginia, could never have imagined for herself as a young girl. When asked about the transition to flying commercial planes, Claiborne stresses that “a pilot is a pilot.”“You’re in different type organizations, but you’re still a pilot,” she adds. So this is an opportunity for her to really enjoy herself.”Increasing diversityClaiborne is committed to increasing pilot diversity and will continue to mentor young women. The North American Pet Health Insurance Association found that pet owners in the US paid $3.9 billion in premiums in 2023, a 22% increase from the year before. CNN —Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a rally Thursday in the Bronx as his campaign looks to make inroads with Hispanic and Black voters ahead of November’s election. A Trump campaign official told CNN that several factors, including the former president’s long history of living and working in New York and his efforts to win over minority voters, played into the decision to hold the Bronx rally. The Bronx is a Democratic stronghold, which Trump lost by about 68 points to Joe Biden in 2020. Residents in the South Bronx, where Trump’s rally is taking place, are mainly Hispanic (64%) and Black (31%), according to the US Census Bureau. Several House Republicans from New York said they could no longer make it to Trump’s event due to changes in the chamber’s voting schedule Thursday.

Some of her most popular videos cover shows and movies like “The Vampire Diaries,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and installments in the “Star Wars” franchise. None of them are nearly as long as her most recent video, “The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.”Over the course of 20 video chapters, Nicholson details her 2022 stay at the “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser” hotel in Orlando, Florida. The tale is likely familiar to Disney and Star Wars fans, many of whom heard about the high-dollar, high-concept hotel and its closure in 2023. The big draw of the hotel lay in what Disney marketing called an “immersive, customizable Star Wars experience” that Nicholson equated to LARPing, or live-action roleplaying. “I couldn’t care less about some dumb Star Wars hotel, but give me those 4 hours,” one X user said.

Middle managers are becoming an endangered species in Corporate America, with some companies viewing the role as obsolete , writes Business Insider's Lindsay Dodgson. Remote work, tech efficiencies, and a general push to cut costs have contributed to middle managers' demise. It's a strategy Corporate America, particularly Big Tech, deployed in 2023. The "year of efficiency," as Mark Zuckerberg dubbed it, was all about flattening organizations, and middle managers were the ones getting squished . The death of middle managers could also fuel the current dismantling of another cohort: the middle class .

But the chapter on "Daily Rules and Customs" is where foreigners will find specific guidance on "life rules" that illustrate Japan's emphasis on collectivism and respect. Not only party and music levels should be kept to a minimum, but also "voices" and "TV" levels, the guidebook states. A Japanese guidebook for foreigners advises against making noise by using washing machines early in the morning or late at night. After weeks of being the headline-grabbing defendant in a criminal trial in Manhattan, Donald J. Trump will head to Crotona Park in the Bronx for a rally on Thursday where he no doubt hopes to take a more favorable star turn. “I wish he would just disappear,” said Noel Rivera, a retired subway track worker who was walking his dog in Crotona Park on Wednesday. “Nobody that I know supports him.”Mr. Trump’s event on Thursday evening in the expansive park in the South Bronx is his first campaign rally in New York State since 2016. I tried beef hot dogs from Nathan's, Sabrett, Applegate, and Ball Park. Ball Park had the thickest frank, but I thought Applegate's organic hot dogs packed the most flavor. I didn't think Sabrett's less-than-flavorful hot dogs warranted their higher price tag. The months between Memorial Day and Labor Day are recognized as "hot dog season" by the sausage industry. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans consume roughly 7 billion hot dogs during this time and produce roughly $614 million in hot-dog sales.

Neighborhood names are also shorthand for your rent or mortgage payments. In 2017, real-estate brokers in the historically Black New York neighborhood of Harlem sparked backlash when they tried to rebrand its south end as SoHa. At their best, new neighborhood names bring people together over a shared sense of pride in their little corner of the world. Along the way, these neighborhood names have veered into parody territory. I'm not saying that neighborhood names should be set in stone — in fact, I think it's natural for them to evolve alongside their populations.

CNN —Andy Murray has seen a lot during his glittering career, but even he looked confused at what took place during his match against Yannick Hanfmann at the Geneva Open on Monday. The three-time grand slam champion was trailing by a set and two breaks when the umpire stopped play due to an impending storm. High winds had already disrupted the match, with white pollen from the nearby park blowing over and showering the players during the second set. Having already lost the first set 7-5, Murray was irked by the conditions and complained to umpire Greg Allensworth during a change of ends about the decision to keep playing. Yannick Hanfmann had taken a commanding lead over Murray in the match.
