Meanwhile, Meta has struggled with applying its content policies fairly across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, according to The Wall Street Journal. Experts say companies often find themselves out of their depth in talking about the knotty topic and that sometimes there’s little benefit to rushing out a statement. Some companies, especially those without operations in the Middle East, have chosen not to speak. In related news: How diplomats from the U.S., Qatar and elsewhere helped free two Americans taken hostage by Hamas. The two were far apart earlier this month on issues including streaming payouts and the use of artificial intelligence.

One user's bio had been translated to say: "Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom." AdvertisementAdvertisementMeta has apologized for Instagram's auto-translation feature adding "Palestinian terrorist" to the bio of some users, despite the original descriptions containing no such wording. The TikToker showed that his Instagram bio had a line that contained three elements — "Palestinian" in English, a Palestinian flag emoji, and the Arabic phrase "alhamdulillah." Instagram's auto-translation software converted the entire line to "Praise be to God, Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom," along with the Palestinian flag emoji, according to the video. In a statement to several outlets, a Meta spokesperson said the issue was fixed earlier this week.

In an episode of life imitating art, several stars of popular Israeli spy-thriller series “Fauda” are volunteering and being called up as reservists in the conflict with Hamas. “Fauda,” available on Netflix, concerns an Israeli undercover team hunting down Palestinian terrorists operating in the West Bank and Gaza. It tries to bring nuance and humanity to characters on both sides and has been particularly popular in the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Jordan. Among other “Fauda” actors who showed up for reserve duty were Tzachi Halevi, Idan Amedi and Yaakov Zada Daniel. “This is not a scene from “Fauda,”’ Amedi said in a video posted to X.

Footage of an Israeli airstrike in 2021 that collapsed Gaza’s Al-Shorouk tower block has been falsely captioned on social media as showing a 2023 response to an attack on its soil from the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Gaza’s health ministry said a further 770 people were killed in the retaliatory strikes. But the video is unrelated to the retaliatory strikes. The grille-windows of an adjacent building are visible in a photo hosted on Getty Images which shows an aerial view of Al-Shorouk tower’s rubble. The video shows an Israeli airstrike destroying Gaza’s Al-Shorouk tower in 2021.

Reports of women stripped naked and paraded by fighters in Gaza, toddlers kidnapped alongside Holocaust survivors, homes burst into by terrorists hunting down Jews. The last one, with its supposed vision of a peaceful Palestinian state living side by side with Israel. I spent nearly three years at the Trump White House attempting to reach a peace deal between Israel and its Palestinian neighbors. (Indeed, the peace plan we crafted was rejected by the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah before they even read it.) Israel cannot achieve peace with Palestinians when a segment of the Palestinian population still intends to destroy it.

The Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin ended early on Wednesday, July 5. Twelve Palestinians were killed and scores more injured after Israeli forces launched their largest military operation in the West Bank in 20 years. One Israeli soldier was killed and one was wounded in the incursion. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was a response to Israel's military operation in Jenin. Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.

CNN —The Israeli military’s operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin is winding down but “not over” until the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) say it is, a spokesperson told CNN, as the United Nations expressed deep concern over the violence in the city’s sprawling refugee camp. At least 12 people, ranging in ages from 16 to 23, have been killed and scores more injured after Israeli forces launched operations in the camp this week, Palestinian officials say. “We are now in the end of achieving our goals, inside Jenin, fighting the terror and dismantling the terror in the Jenin Camp,” Hagari said. The operation was carried out because the gunmen “posed a threat to the security forces exiting from the Jenin Camp,” the IDF added. Rudeineh said that “the Israeli army was attacking Palestinian citizens” and added, “What happened yesterday was completely dangerous.”
