Biden's USAGM transition team leader is Richard Stengel, an MSNBC political analyst and former managing editor at Time magazine. A Biden transition spokesperson did not return a request for comment. Names to replace Pack that have been floated to Biden agency review members include Grant Turner, who was once USAGM's acting CEO, this person said. The Biden team also conferred with Steve Capus, a former senior advisor at USAGM, who was ousted at the start of Pack's tenure. A spokeswoman for NPR did not deny that Lansing spoke to Biden's transition team and declined to comment further.

What should be in your travel safety kittoondelamour/Getty ImagesFirst and foremost, remember the basics: Keep your hands clean and stay away from people outside of your household as much as possible. Onzie Mindful Masks (2-pack) Onzie makes non-medical, reusable face masks with elastic straps. She says she sees no downside to adding a face shield to your travel safety kit, but "they are not an equivalent substitute for face masks." As with hand sanitizer, a hand wipe formula needs to be at least 60% alcohol to kill viruses. Since washing with soap and water isn't always possible, and restrooms aren't typically available, you should always have hand sanitizer with you.

Judge rules against Trump global media chief after firings
  + stars: | 2020-11-21 | by ( The Associated Press | ) + 0.00   time to read: +3 min
The ruling effectively bars U.S. Agency for Global Media CEO Michael Pack from making personnel decisions and interfering in editorial operations. Pack, a conservative filmmaker, Trump ally and onetime associate of former Trump political adviser Steve Bannon, made no secret of his intent to shake up the agency after taking over in June. In July, Pack had ordered an investigation into the posting of a video package featuring now President-elect Joe Biden on a VOA website. Fourteen senior VOA journalists sent a letter to management in August protesting Pack’s actions, including the dismissal of foreign journalists and his comments denigrating VOA staff, which they said were endangering their colleagues and the international broadcaster’s credibility. The global media agency did not immediately respond to a written request for comment on the ruling.

Djokovic and Nadal sent packing by Thiem and Medvedev

But times are a changing, or so it seems, and Medvedev and Thiem had not read the script. “At 5-4 in the second set I decided to change some small things and start going for things a little more. I had to change and it worked really well,” said Medvedev, who was 100% in group play, including a win over Djokovic. Medvedev looked the more likely winner as he raced through his service games in the opening set while Nadal laboured. Undeterred, Medvedev kept hammering away and Nadal dipped at the start of the second set, dropping serve with a double fault.

(CNN) The chief executive of the agency that oversees Voice of America and his team must stop investigating and interfering with the journalists employed there, a federal judge ruled Friday. In a 76-page ruling , US District Judge Beryl Howell found that Michael Pack , CEO of the US Agency for Global Media, and his team violated the First Amendment rights of its journalists. She also found that Pack and his team showed an "extensive pattern of penalizing those USAGM and network employees whom defendants regard as insufficiently supportive of President Trump." The ruling is in response to a lawsuit filed by five senior executives at USAGM whom Pack had fired or suspended in August. "Defendants' extensive pattern of penalizing those USAGM and network employees whom defendants regard as insufficiently supportive of President Trump has resulted in the termination, discipline, and investigation of multiple employees and journalists," the judge wrote in her ruling.

Using data from local registries, Raksha estimates that Russia reached around 160,000-170,000 excess deaths from April to November. Between April and September 2020, Russia's official excess mortality figure was roughly 117,000 more deaths, compared to last year, according to Rosstat, the Russian statistics agency. The official Covid-19 death toll for that period is roughly 21,000 people. Raksha says he quit Rosstat in July after being publicly vocal about the way the agency counts coronavirus-related deaths. "Only the first tier of victim, when the patient has tested positive for coronavirus before dying, is recorded as a Covid-19 death," Raksha told CNN.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — Had it not been for dozens of U.S. airstrikes in recent weeks, the southern hub city Kandahar would be under siege, after Taliban fighters threatened to overrun several surrounding districts, security officials say. Now with President Trump’s orders to cut American forces in Afghanistan by roughly half — from 4,500 to 2,500 — Kandahar’s fate, and the fate of the Afghan security forces spread across the country, are once more in question. “If it were not for the air support of U.S. forces, the Taliban would be sitting inside Kandahar city now,” Col. Zabiullah Ghorzang, an Afghan Army regimental commander in Kandahar Province, said Tuesday. The Pentagon on Tuesday formally announced those troop cuts, stopping short of the full withdrawal by Christmas that Mr. Trump had mused about publicly and ensuring that the war in Afghanistan will transition to a fourth American administration over almost 20 years of conflict.

Breakingviews - Republicans try packing the Fed before Trump exits

A pedestrian walks past the Federal Reserve Board building on Constitution Avenue in Washington, U.S., March 19, 2019. The U.S. Senate will finally vote on the controversial nomination of Judy Shelton to the central bank’s board. That would fill the Fed board in a way it hasn’t been for years. Republicans have every right to approve nominees for empty Fed seats. Politicizing the Fed, especially at a time of economic uncertainty because of the pandemic, devalues the central bank.

President Trump, Pack Your Bags and Be Gone - The New York Times

The ruler broods, alone with his rage and shame, undone by rejection, his mind, like Macbeth’s, “full of scorpions,” plotting to overturn facts and destroy American democracy. His lackeys, and only they remain, try to humor the master in his labyrinth. Donald Trump, departing president, lost in an election that a division of the Department of Homeland Security has now called “the most secure in American history,” with no “evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes or was in any way compromised.”Mr. President, get the boxes, get the tape, pack your bags and be gone. Trump can no more accept defeat than recall the fact that he took an oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”His only vow is to preserve, protect and defend himself. No Bible offers consolation to this man, no creed, no truth, no sense of decency, not even Fox News now, nothing.

The Pentagon saw a string of high-level departures this week after President Donald Trump said he "terminated" the defense secretary, and the administration filled a number of those voids with Trump loyalists. Top Pentagon leadership positions are being packed with loyalists to President Donald Trump for reasons that are unclear and triggering mounting concern. A defense official told CNN that the situation was "unsettling," adding that "these are dictator moves." We don't know which of those might be true, if any, but in the absence of any better explanation, people are concerned." "All of those things are essentially damaging, not only to the Department of Defense, but to our country," Lapan said.

Under Trump, the United States has been missing in action — and worse — in the fight for human rights and democracy. The issues with the UN Human Rights CouncilIn the absence of the United States, China — along with Russia and others — recently have been elected to the United Nations' Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The US should rejoin, and bolster the human rights defenders who successfully defeated Saudi Arabia's cynical bid for the UNHRC Council. Should those two things occur, Adobe expects consumers could spend an extra $11 billion online, pushing total holiday spending past $200 billion. That will account for 42% of all online sales during the holidays, and mark 55% year-over-year growth for mobile devices, Adobe said. Americans are expected to spend $10.3 billion online the day after Thanksgiving, Adobe said, up 39% year over year. One lesson the Berkshire Hathaway CEO loves to teach is the importance of developing good personal qualities at a young age. "There's nothing wrong with getting the highest grades in the class, but that isn't going to be the quality that sets apart a big winner from the rest of the pack," said Buffett. And here comes the hooker: In addition to this person, Buffett told the students they had to sell short another one of their classmates and pay 10% of what they do.
