Utilities, beloved for their dividend payments, are under pressure in today's high rate environment, but a few gems stand out in the tarnished sector, according to Bank of America. The sector has suffered through 2023, shedding 16%, as the Federal Reserve continues to roll out its policy-tightening campaign. But there are a few opportunities in the sector, even as Bank of America says utilities aren't particularly compelling now. Both are also deemed top buys by Bank of America. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government bought Trans Mountain in 2018 for C$4.5 billion to rescue the expansion project, which has struggled with years of regulatory delay and massive cost overruns. A Reuters survey of five analysts and investors valued Trans Mountain between C$15 billion and C$25 billion, based on factors including projected earnings and oil shipping tolls. Trans Mountain Corp (TMC) CEO Dawn Farrell told local media last week the sale could wrap up by early 2025, just as Canada heads into a federal election. Trans Mountain offers strategic value as it is the only pipeline taking crude from Canada's oil patch to the Pacific, and on to Asian refining markets. "It's hard to imagine...that a pipeline like Trans Mountain would ever be built again," Poscente said.

Utilities have limped through much of 2023, but a few catalysts could lift a handful of stocks into the end of the year, according to Morgan Stanley. The wildfires in Maui have drawn attention to how severe weather can pose a risk to utilities. Nevertheless, there could be room for some year-end upside, Morgan Stanley analyst David Arcaro said in a report last week. "We expect a constructive outcome in the case supporting the upper half of earnings guidance," the Morgan Stanley analyst said. Morgan Stanley has an overweight recommendation on all three utilities.

The frequency of mass shootings in the United States means there is a ritual, of sorts, associated with each occurrence. Republican politicians offer “thoughts and prayers,” Democratic politicians condemn those offering only “thoughts and prayers,” and their respective allies in the media trade barbs over gun control. On Twitter, Megyn Kelly — a former Fox News anchor — took part in the ritual with a series of tweets castigating gun control proponents for focusing on, well, gun control. “Serious q for gun control advocates: you’ve failed to effect change,” she said. We’re all well aware you don’t like that fact, but fact it is.

As the Fed delivered what markets assume will be the last rate hike of a brutal 13-month, 500-basis-point tightening cycle, further aftershocks from the March bank blowups reverberated in the background. And given they had advance knowledge of next week's quarterly loan survey before Wednesday's rate decision, it suggests the bigger picture they see remains somewhat equivocal. Norway's central bank raised interest rates as expected and signalled more to come. Events to watch for on Thursday:* European Central Bank policy decision, statement and news conference* U.S. first quarter unit labor costs and productivity, April layoffs, March trade balance, weekly jobless claims. [1/2] The entrance to Shell's LNG Canada project site is shown in Kitimat in northwestern British Columbia on April 12, 2014. While the tougher regulation will not impact the huge Shell-led (SHEL.L) LNG Canada project already under construction, a proposed export terminal adjoining the small-scale Tilbury LNG facility and the early-stage Ksi Lisims LNG project in northern B.C will fall under the new rule. The province will start exporting 14 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) when LNG Canada enters service in 2025. "That (net-zero requirement) is a very high bar and a high hurdle to pass," said Mark Zacharias, executive director of think-tank Clean Energy Canada, adding the new framework rounds out B.C. 's new regulations also include an oil and gas emissions cap and plans to accelerate the electrification of the economy.
Credit-worthy companies have found in the past that they can raise funds more cheaply in investment-grade bond markets. They were able to issue the securities at much lower interest rates than what they would have had to pay on a bond. In interviews, two bankers and an investor said that uncertainty has made convertible bonds an attractive option to raise money for some investment-grade companies. Earlier this week, for example, investors bought PPL’s convertible bond at 100 cents on the dollar, or at par. Because defensive stocks such as utilities like PPl could benefit if interest rates keep rising, potential returns for investors in convertible bonds could be boosted.

Unlike much of last year, the rates market is now inclined to believe the central bank on the direction of travel. And implied year-end rates are as high as 5.12% - almost half a point higher than where the current rate sits. Two-year Treasury yields hit a three-month high at 4.72% on Friday, with 10-year yields at 3-month peaks too - homing in on 4% for the first time since November. So as impressive as this week's stock market resilience had been to the new inflation and rates environment, it appears to be buckling again already. Key developments that may provide direction to U.S. markets later on Friday:* U.S. Jan import and export prices, leading indicator.
Tubi aired a cheeky prank commercial during Super Bowl LVII on Sunday that many are still discussing. With a majority of S & P 500 companies having posted their quarterly results, investors' focus will turn toward inflation and the consumer price index reading in the upcoming week. The three major indexes are on pace to end the week down, with the S & P 500 poised to post its worst performance since December. Sharp declines for Alphabet , which is off by more than 9% this week, dragged the tech-heavy index. January's consumer price index With the latest Powell speech in the books, investors are now looking ahead to the consumer price index for insight into the pace of inflation. "Retail sales and CPI is really driven by the consumer, and a lot of eyes are on how the consumer doing," Bruno said.
