ECB: Interest rates are coming down in Europe

London CNN —The European Central Bank cut interest rates Thursday, moving before the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England to lower borrowing costs as inflation recedes following years of rate hikes. Central banks in Switzerland and Sweden have also cut interest rates this year. Analysts doubt the central bank will cut rates again at its next meeting in July. It added that it would keep interest rates “sufficiently restrictive for as long as necessary” to return inflation to the 2% target. Higher interest rates tend to attract more international capital flows into a country, lifting demand for its currency.

On top of that, the S & P 500 is trading at record levels thanks in large measure to the unrelenting momentum in Nvidia. Hot jobs growth + weaker-than-expected wage growth: The S & P 500 would advance 0.25% to 0.75% in this event, the traders said. In-line jobs growth + strong wage growth: This outcome indicates inflation persists given tight labor market conditions. Disappointing jobs growth + hotter-than-expected wage expansion: JPMorgan traders think this would be the worst outcome for market bulls, with the S & P 500 losing 1.25%-2%. Shares of Citigroup (C) have far outpaced the major equity benchmarks in 2024, gaining around 22% year-to-date versus the S & P 500's 13%. Soon after, the stock broke above its 40-week moving average, validating the strength of the rally off the October low. Then in February 2024, the stock pushed above the 150-week moving average, validating the strength and persistence of the uptrend phase. The weekly PPO indicator has since registered a sell signal, indicating that the previous uptrend phase is likely terminated. But a failure to regain the 50-day moving average in early June would mean the previous uptrend phase is most likely exhausted.
