Today's cars have an unprecedented capacity to surveil people inside and around them, and it's raising alarms with privacy advocates. A growing chorus of advocates and politicians say automakers aren't doing enough to protect consumer data from companies, criminals or even the government itself. "Our cars aren't a means of independence and privacy anymore," said Jen Caltrider, director of the Mozilla Foundation's Privacy Not Included program, in an interview with CNBC. GM, Nissan, Stellantis and BMW responded with statements saying they take customer privacy and data protection very seriously and comply with all applicable laws. In late April, two senators asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate automakers for allegedly deceiving customers about the companies' data management practices.

Hallworth's business, Dan Car Logistics, ships more than 100 flash cars a year. If anything, he says, the flow of wheels has reversed; he’s often transporting cars from London to Dubai for people travelling or doing business there. December was the busiest month, and the biggest destinations for cars leaving the UAE were Frankfurt, Zurich and Chicago. Some of Hallworth's clients have been put off storing cars in cities like London. “We always want the owner’s ID, the registration documents of the cars and to get a feel of the customer,” he says.

Australia on Wednesday announced it had dropped its legal battle against Elon Musk's X to have graphic footage of a church stabbing in Sydney removed from the social media platform. The dispute was widely seen as a test case for the Australian government's ability to enforce its online safety standards on the social media giants. Julie Inman-Grant, Commissioner of Australia's online safety regulator, said in a statement that after weighing "multiple considerations," she decided that discontinuing the proceedings would "likely achieve the most positive outcome for the online safety of all Australians, especially children." I stand by my investigators and the decisions eSafety made," Inman-Grant said, referencing Australia's independent regulator for online safety. Last month, the Musk-owned social media platform won a reprieve in Australia when a court refused to extend a temporary order blocking videos of a Sydney church stabbing globally.

New York CNN —Champion, the more than century-old sportswear brand, has a new owner. Hanesbrands announced Wednesday that it will sell Champion to Authentic Brands Group in a deal worth up to $1.5 billion with performance incentives. Many consumers have pulled back on discretionary clothing, a trend that has hurt Champion’s rivals such as Nike and Under Armour. Champion had made an exclusive C-9 Champion line for Target for around 15 years, but the contract expired in early 2020 as Target focused more on its own private-label brands. The company then started selling the C-9 line on Amazon.

"I think it may be leading to some rethink into the consideration of letting private equity, as an example, or institutional investors into the NFL." While U.S. pro sports leagues had prohibited private equity investors previously, they've largely softened their stances in recent years, aside from letting any firm be a controlling owner of a team. President Biden’s decision this week to seal the border temporarily to most asylum seekers was a striking policy shift. It sharply divided his party, invited comparisons to policies backed by former President Donald Trump and made him the owner of the most restrictive immigration measure ever to be carried out by a modern Democratic president. It also aligned him with a broad swath of the public on a key issue in an election year. In doing so, they hope to neutralize an issue that the former president has made a major focus of his campaign. “It’s part of the overall effort to not just neutralize but to show the Republicans for their hypocrisy.”
