What to Know About Life-Saving ECPR
  + stars: | 2024-03-27 | by ( Helen Ouyang | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
As an emergency doctor, I know that it’s incredibly rare for standard resuscitation protocols including CPR to revive patients brought to the hospital in cardiac arrest. Survival rates after cardiac arrest have hardly improved in decades, so when I heard about these statistics from one program in Minnesota, I was very eager to visit it. Here is what to know about ECPR and its availability. In the E.R., doctors will continue with chest compressions and administer other standard resuscitation measures. When this high-tech treatment is used during cardiac arrest, the intervention is called ECPR.

The Race to Reinvent CPR

Until that Thursday in August 2022, John Sauer’s most pressing health concern had been his seasonal allergies. She told her daughter to call 911, and the two women struggled to get Sauer, who is very tall and rather bulky, onto the ground to start CPR. She had taught CPR classes, but she had never done it on a real person. Up and down, up and down, her fingers interlocked, hand over hand. Here I am doing chest compressions, she thought, and this CPR is never going to wake him up.

What Makes a Top Runway Model in 2024?
  + stars: | 2024-03-05 | by ( Elizabeth Paton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There is one model who walked in more fashion shows than any other in 2023. Yilan Hua is from China. Ms. Hua, 24, is the leading face of a new generation of popular Chinese models that includes He Cong, Chu Wong and Ying Ouyang — despite a family death this season that kept her off the runway for much of Paris Fashion Week. So why is the industry so taken with her, and what does her ascent reflect about the importance of China to luxury fashion? “Yilan doesn’t necessarily embody the traditional beauty standards revered by Chinese audiences,” Ms. Zhang wrote in an email.

Now the edifice may finally be cracking: The #MeToo movement is picking up pace in the medical profession. Dr. Hadden was an obstetrician-gynecologist who was first arrested when a patient called the police and reported that he had licked her genitals during an exam. Though I was working at the medical center while the accusations unfurled, I wasn’t aware of them until more recently. Even after Dr. Hadden was found guilty, Columbia did not notify all of his patients about his behavior. On Nov. 23, the one-year look-back window closes for past patients to sue Dr. Hadden and the medical center.

Bariatric Surgery at 16

It’s the exact opposite.” The number of teenagers who underwent bariatric surgery more than doubled nationwide between 2010 and 2017 and continues to rise. Seeley emphasizes that weight loss doesn’t simply result from a newly tiny stomach that limits how much people can eat. The crucial roles instead seem to be played by bile acids and antimicrobial peptides in the gut, each of which increase markedly after surgery; Seeley is still sorting out the exact mechanisms of their influence. “Why bariatric surgery works so well is because you’re changing lots of things at the same time,” Seeley says. Most important, bariatric surgery seems to reset, to a lower bound, the body weight that the brain tries to maintain.

For many, we may be the first health care workers they meet at their most dismal hour. But it’s also what makes our workplace so dangerous, more than ever, and jeopardizes the emergency care that everyone receives. Last year one of my patients was on the phone, lamenting about how long he had been in the emergency room. When I turned to look at him, he yelled a racial epithet before hurling a desktop computer into the area where doctors and nurses sit. The health workers at the University of Vermont Health Network in the video above share examples of this.

In the indigenous language category, the Paiwan singers Kasiwa and Matzka rapped and sang in their native tongue, with Kasiwa getting the prestigious jury award. Taylor Swift is an unlikely public transit icon

New York CNN —Taylor Swift, public transit savior? Public transit systems across the United States are getting a much-needed, if temporary, boost from Taylor Swift fans flooding trains, buses and subways to her sold-out Eras Tour. As transit agencies scramble to recover from the pandemic, transit experts say all those Swifies taking mass transit offer lessons for policymakers on how to adapt to the post-pandemic world. Philadelphia’s SEPTA system and New Jersey Transit also got a boost from concertgoers taking mass transit to Swift shows. But public transit agencies still have yet to fully recover from the impact of the pandemic.

And consumers have been moving toward demanding more frictionless payment methods across online and offline channels. For some time now, consumers have been moving toward demanding more frictionless payment methods across online and offline channels. Ecommerce retailers, not to be outdone, are finding ways to improve their transactions as well. Data suggests adults plan to continue to use touchless payment methods after the pandemic is over. One of the ways brands and retailers are working to reduce ecommerce friction is providing more payment methods at checkout.
