Global stocks, as measured by the MSCI World Index, are up nearly 10% year-to-date. "I see election risks as one of — if not the biggest — risks to markets in the second half of the year." Why international stocks will best the USInvestors should hedge against the potential downsides of populism and geopolitical conflicts by owning a diverse basket of international stocks, Kleintop said. If that pattern holds, foreign firms will take the baton from US equities, which have mostly led global markets since the financial crisis. Advertisement"I wouldn't say that you would want to abandon US equities, or even abandon some of those high-flying tech or AI-related stocks," Kleintop said.

The pressure is heating up on Apple to flaunt its AI potential at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference Monday. Shares of Apple have lagged major technology peers since the start of the year, rising just 1.5%. While the Apple event isn't typically regarded as a big market-moving stock catalyst, the highly anticipated announcement of new generative AI-enabled features changes the narrative this year, Woodring said. He added that shares tend to underperform the S & P 500 by 10 basis points on average on the day of the event. The analyst retained a $225 price target on Apple shares, implying 14% upside from Friday's close.

The S & P 500 made a new record high, its 25 th of the year. And on the surface, there is a stolid calm that suggests a system in comfortable equilibrium, the market achieving a kind of homeostasis. Four of the past five days last week, the S & P 500 moved less than 0.2%. The S & P 500 is up almost 2% since its closing peak at the end of the first quarter, perhaps the moment of maximum belief in a seamless soft economic landing. Three stocks together now account for fully 20% of the S & P 500 market value, mocking the notion of diversification and dashing most active investors' hopes of beating the bogey.

Buying stocks with a rising exposure to artificial intelligence could lead to outperformance later this year, according to Morgan Stanley. But for investors who have missed out on the AI trade, Morgan Stanley says it's not too late. In a recent note, a team of eight Morgan Stanley strategists led by Edward Stanley highlighted a group of stocks where artificial intelligence is beginning to play a bigger role in their business, which they called "the enablers." "We believe this strategy of picking stocks where AI materiality is increasing will continue to work for investors for the remainder of 2024," Morgan Stanley wrote. Earlier this week, both Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs reiterated buy ratings on First Solar.

The 60/40 portfolio isn't dead — in fact, it tends to outperform over the long term, according to UBS. The strategy revolves around a simple balanced portfolio, allocating 60% to stocks and 40% to fixed income. That theory was tested when both equities and fixed income slumped in 2022. Crafting a balanced portfolio Falconio expects the new 60/40 construction to look a little different with the rise in popularity of alternative assets. While stock splits don't affect a company's value, they can catalyze a move higher or lower, according to Wolfe Research. Artificial intelligence chipmaker Nvidia announced a 10-for-1 stock split as part of its quarterly earnings report on May 22. "With yields holding firm at elevated levels , large caps continue to outperform small caps. Hopes for multiple rate cuts from the Federal Reserve this year have dimmed after recent inflation readings showed signs of stickiness. An economy that is growing more slowly, but with cooler inflation, could be the combination small caps need. Small caps could also benefit from an uptick in the global economy that benefits areas like manufacturing that has heavy representation in the small-cap index. Higgins also observed that the relative performance of U.K. stocks has "generally been underwhelming since 2010," when the Conservatives took office. Three could be attributed to the "unsustainability of fixed exchange rate regimes" between the 1930s and 1970s, one to the Great Financial Crisis, and the fifth to the 1976 Debt Crisis, he said.
