CNN —Like its titular tornados, “Twisters” blasts through a lot in its 122-minute runtime. We have discovered the earliest evidence of fresh water and representative evidence for dry land above the sea,” he added. The research indicates that the Earth’s water cycle — when water moves between land, oceans and atmosphere through evaporation and precipitation — was operating at that point in time. The earliest widely agreed upon evidence of life — and fresh water — comes from stromatolites, fossilized microbes that formed mounds in hot springs 3.5 billion years ago, Gamaleldien said. Two zircon crystals showed isotopic evidence of meteoric or fresh water; one was 4 billion years old, while the other was 3.4 billion years old, he said. What’s more, land and fresh water, which likely would have fallen as rain, would have provided the essential ingredients for the origin of life, he said.

The 2024 Subaru Ascent Touring from the driver's seat. Benjamin Zhang/Business InsiderThe Subaru Ascent delivers a pleasant and reassuring driving experience. The continuously variable transmission is the weakest point in Ascent's driving experience and its drive train. The noise, reminiscent of a dying torque converter on a traditional automatic, disappears once the vehicle reaches normal operating temperature. With that said, Subaru's Lineartronic unit is one of the most capable CVTs on the market and is able to provide a serviceable approximation of a traditional automatic transmission.

What Makes a Society More Resilient? Frequent Hardship.
  + stars: | 2024-05-01 | by ( Carl Zimmer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Traditionally, historians have studied these downturns qualitatively, by diving into the twists and turns of individual societies. In a study published Wednesday, these methods allowed Dr. Riris and his colleagues to answer a profound question: Why are some societies more resilient than others? The study, published in the journal Nature, compared 16 societies scattered across the world, in places like the Yukon and the Australian outback. The more often a society went through them, the more resilient it eventually became. “Over time, you will suffer less, essentially,” said Dr. Riris, an archaeologist at Bournemouth University in England.

As fast-food prices increase, customers are finding more value in chain restaurants. Chains like Chili's are rolling out deals and portion sizes that could best fast-food chains. Chili's new Big Smasher burger is the latest offensive move in the value wars. The Big Smasher burger, Chili's newest menu item, was served in the company's test kitchen before its official launch on April 29. And if the sheer size and taste of the Chili's burger are anything to go by, it has a shot at beating fast-food chains in the value wars.

After a slow start to the year, several restaurant chains are due to emerge as the winners this earnings season, according to Jefferies. First of all, same-store sales only modestly recovered in March to around flat, while the key metric was down 4.5% in January and 0.6% in February, analyst Andy Barish wrote. He added customer traffic remains challenged as well, although this varies from restaurant brand to restaurant brand, while consumers have simultaneously grown more cautious about their spending. Jefferies believes that the restaurant chain's earnings per share will come in line, while same-store sales are more likely to have some upside. Barish sees first-quarter U.S. same-store sales and earnings per share estimates coming in line with analyst expectations, while EBITDA could surprise to the upside.

CNN —Prehistoric humans in Brazil carved drawings in the rock next to dinosaur footprints, suggesting that they may have found them meaningful or interesting, a new study has found. A dashed line indicates petroglyphs made by indigenous people, while a continuous line shows theropod dinosaur footprints. “I think rock art creation was embedded in some sort of ritual context: people gathering and creating something, perhaps utilizing some psychotropics. I think they were interested in what the footprints represent, and I suppose they identified them as footprints. “This was the case in various parts of the world where rock art was practiced, and it is very clearly visible, among others, in the North American Southwest/U.S.

Long before Alexis Wright was a towering figure in Australian letters, she took notes during community meetings in remote outback towns. Put to task by Aboriginal elders, her job was to take down their every word in longhand. The work was laborious, and it soothed her youthful fervor for the change that seemed all too slow to arrive. “It was good training, in a way,” she said in a recent interview at a public library close to the University of Melbourne, where until 2022 she held the role of Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature. “They were teaching you to listen, and they were teaching you patience.”Wright, 73, is arguably the most important Aboriginal Australian — or simply Australian — writer alive today.
