Like Oscar Isaac, I occasionally use chopsticks to eat hot Cheetos, a technique that keeps their red dust from sticking to my fingers. It’s the neatest way to keep pace with a perfectly engineered snack, designed both to satisfy the desire for its prickly heat and violent crunch, its convincing tang and mellow sweetness, and to fuel an immediate need to revisit it. There are films this year celebrating (and satirizing) the invention of all kinds of consumer products, including the BlackBerry, Air Jordans and Tetris, but I never imagined that this spicy little snack produced by a multinational corporation could be the hero of a late-capitalist uplift saga. “Flamin’ Hot,” directed by Eva Longoria and streaming now on Hulu and Disney Plus, is a frothy, optimistic, very American film about Richard Montañez, a Mexican American kid from San Bernardino County who grows up to work at a Frito-Lay plant and dreams up a billion-dollar idea: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Through Montañez, the rise of the fingertip-staining, habit-forming, spicy corn-based snack becomes a story of the American dream — a ’90s-style janitor-to-executive tale fueled by pure grit and guts.

☆ ‘Master Gardener’ Review: Paul Schrader’s Solitary Man

Part of the kick of “Master Gardener” is that the writer-director Paul Schrader manages to pull off this improbable movie. As has been the case in many of Schrader’s stories, this one centers on a man who’s of this world and apart. That character — “God’s lonely man,” as he’s called in “Taxi Driver,” which Schrader wrote — has appeared repeatedly in his filmography. That lonely man is here again, risen once more in “Master Gardener,” but now named Narvel Roth and played like a clenched fist by Joel Edgerton. In all three movies, a solitary, soul-weary man in crisis — who’s invariably seen alone in a room writing in a journal he shares in voice-over — undergoes a kind of transfiguration.

But the Tony committee gave the show’s team something to laugh about, lavishing six nominations, including two for Cooper himself: best play and best featured actor in a play. Cooper, who portrayed a saucy airline hostess named Peaches, gave it his all, onstage and off: When the show’s sudden closing was first announced, he took to Instagram to rally audiences. The first trailer for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” dropped on Tuesday, starting off with a contemplative moment between Morales – one of multiple Spider-Men throughout the multiverse – talking to his mother Rio as they look out on a view of New York City. John Leguizamo is an Emmy and Tony award-winning actor, and he's calling out Hollywood. In an open letter to Hollywood, he says it's way past time that Latinos have more lead roles. In an "Open Letter to Hollywood" published in the LA Times, Leguizamo said the time for more Latino representation in film, TV, and plays is way past overdue. Leguizamo argued that the absence of Latinos onscreen isn't even reflective of the city in which Hollywood resides. Latino representation also means including Latinos of all hues, since "more often than not," the Latinos who are cast in major roles are "white-passing."

Reyes said Hollywood films often reflected the politics of their time — and that had an influence on Latino roles. Studies by the Government Accountability Office, the University of Southern California and other groups consistently show that Latinos are underrepresented in the film industry. Just this year, UCLA’s Hollywood Diversity Report documented “enormous gains” by women and people of color, but Latino representation still lagged. Slowly but surely, we are shaking up the narrative in Hollywood.”Calderón is frustrated by the continuing practice of “brownface,” whereby Latino roles go to white actors. Sanchez cited Eugenio Derbez in “Coda” (2021) as an example of a well-written Latino film character.

Latinos are underrepresented in the media industry workforce across film, radio, television, newspapers and digital platforms, according to the report. Latinos are 19% of the nation's population, almost 1 in 5 Americans, and 18% of workers outside the media industry. The largest percentage of Hispanic media industry workers were employed in service worker positions (19%) — which include food, cleaning and personal and protective services, according to the latest available reports submitted by media companies to the U.S. In positions that can influence the content audiences consume, Latinos were far less represented: They made up only 7% of professional media industry positions such as actors, producers, directors, writers, reporters and editors. When Latinos did see themselves represented in content, they felt "it was inaccurate" in most cases, de Armas said.
